Inline Skates: a good workout?

Hi,

Can anyone comment on how good a workout a person can get from inline skates? I am becoming more and more limited in what workouts I can do. I recently was told by a doctor that I may have torn glute muscles. I thought I had piriformis syndrome. The doctor told me that I would have to stop all exercises that aggravate the glute area. Well, this is everything I do except upper boy weight training. I have gradually been modifying my workouts, but I need to modify more before these muscles will heal. I tore them more them about 12 years ago. I am looking into inline skates as an option. But I am not sure if it will aggravate the glute or if it will give me a good workout.

Please answer if you have experience with inline skating.

Thanks,

Kathy

I in line skate every weekend on the trails near my home. I love the workout but I am not sure about your injury. I find that when I get home the area that feels the most worked are the backs of my legs and inner thighs. I would definitely ask your doctor about this form of exercise before starting. Good Luck!

I've only i-line skated a couple of times, but I have to tell you that those few times I did skate my a$$ just about killed me the next day. I know that it works glutes & hams in a tremendous way, so I would not recommend skating at all.

Because of disc disease I know how frustrating it is to not workout for periods of time but you have to take care of yourself & give your body time to heal. You won't lose much muscle definition nor strength. Our muscles have tremendous muscle memory. You will have to start lighter when you can begin again, but you will "recover" what strength you lose in a very short period of time. Just a few workouts, really.

So, my advise to you is to lay off any lower body workout until you have had time to recover. You will have a more speedy recovery with no exercise that works that muscle than if you push yourself.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

Im not sure about your injury but, I rollerblade also and it's an awesome workout especially for your butt muscles!! I think it's a great workout for cardio too!! We rollerblade at a coliseum and 1 hour will make your butt be able to tell you exercised!!
Good luck I love rollerblading!!!

Hi Kathy. I'm not so sure about the exercising factor of it, but I do know from experience that it is much harder to in-line skate than it looks....alot of falling involved. If this is something that may aggrivate your condition, keep that in mind. It will take you a few times....if not more....to get the hang of it, so alot of falling on your a$$ may happen. Just something to think about.

Blading is a great workout, especially if you get low and drive thru each leg movement as well as swing the arms.
