Injectables?

Jennifit

Hi,

If you have done injectables with IUI/IVF, do you have any tips? I am having a really hard time with the shots. It is scary and I am sore around the site. Thanks!!

Jenni

hi there. have some faith, it will work. i did IUI twice and am now happy to say it worked and i am 5 wks pregnant! the site does get sore, and as your dose is adjusted, it can get worse. i did find that my belly was BAD, but on my thighs, the very top was less painful than the sides. don't be scared, think relaxing positive thoughts, and keep the goal in mind. good luck! and let me kn0ow if i can help at all.

Morris,

Thank you so much! I have been doing in the thigh...I will switch legs tonight. Also, did you stick the needle all the way in or can you just stick the tip in your leg? Thanks for helping me.

Also,
:7 congrats to you!!! I am very happy for you. Stay healthy!

i definately went every other day to the other leg (alternated). Also, if i did it after exercising i bled and that was a bit freaky. put the needle all the way in if it is a 5/8 inch or you will get it in the skin layer which can be rough. hope this helps!

Jenni,

You must stick the entire needle into the tissue. The tip will not get the medication into the appropriate tissue for absorption. You should alternate sites.

This is a pretty good guide, except for using an alcohol pad on the site AFTER the injection.

I am a nurse and the self-injection wasn't difficult for me. I did have my DH inject me though... made him part of the process beyond the obvious contribution. :) If you have someone you trust, maybe they could inject you. I admit it is much easier to inject someone else... even for this seasoned nurse. This site had a discussion board for just about everyone. Even an Injectible 101 board.

Best of luck to you!

Wow! Thank you so much for your advice and information! This is really helpful. I am going to have my husband give me the injection tonight...hopefully that will make it easier! Thanks again. Hopefully, I will be on this board again with good news.

Jenni

You are welcome! It is probably too late, but please be sure your DH has been instructed on how to do this. How did it go? Was it easier? Could he inject you? I hope and pray it goes well and you join the mom-to-be. Keep us posted!

Are you talking about the IM progesterone shots? I used an ice pack before and a heating pad after, but they didn't work. After a while, my butt got so sore that I could hardly walk. So I called my doctor and she prescribed prometrium, which she had me use as a vaginal suppository. I alternated the prometrium with the IM progesterone shot. It definitely helped.
Good luck!

Oops - sorry - just read the whole thread. I'm new to this board! I guess I should go see if there's an "introduce yourself" section!

Thank you for thinking of me!! It is going a lot better...My husband went in for a lesson on how to torture me (ha ha) and that made my life a lot easier. I just lay back and sing a song to distract myself. He is doing a great job. I do have some bruising on my leg...but I am too afraid to do it in my stomach. So, we will see. I think I will be getting my IUI later this week or weekend. So, I pray it works!!!!!!

I have been icing the area before the shot, which helps... I can't wait for it to be over! I'll keep you posted.

Thanks!

Happy (belated) Halloween!!:D

Wonderful!!!!! A little bruising isn't that uncommon. I remember when my dad first started giving himself insulin injections, his abdomen looked like he had been beat.

Is this your first IUI? Are you and DH doing one IUI or double? We started with one the first cycle, then went to doubles. Oh, I am the product of an IUI... way back in 1970... technology has come a LONG way. ;) I pray you join the moms-to-be. Definitely keep us posted!

I am only doing a single IUI! They said they do not do double IUIs?!?! I was bummed out. Do you think I should request a double?
How exciting that you were an IUI baby!!!!!!!!! Wow!!! It does work! Anyway, I am so thankful for your support! I will let you know!!
Jenni

IUIs definitely work - I have 3 IUI kids. The first was a single - first try (very lucky), the next two (twins) were a double after years of treatments.

Good luck!!! The hardest part is waiting after ovulation to know if it worked or not!

Erica

Erica,

DO you remember how many follies you had? I only have one mature one - and I am scared that is not enough!? Thanks!

With my oldest son, I think I only had one - I was on Clomid for him.

With my twins and all of my other failed attempts, I had a lot. I didn't respond well to meds until I was overstimulated and then I would have too many.

What is your doctor saying about only having one? I do believe that, in my case, having so many was not a good thing. I've read that if you're overstimulated that the uterus is more irritated and it's harder for the embryo to implant. If you have fewer, then maybe your reproductive organs are closer to "normal" and you'll have a better chance at success.

I hope this makes sense - I'm having a crazy day.:p

Good luck!

Erica

Jenni, your doctor knows your history and current status so trust that the single IUI is perfect for you at this time.

Erica is right, the hardest part is after ovulation. I was soooooo bad with pregnancy tests. So bad.

when they were stimulating me wiht injections, they were quite happy if one follicle is dominant - the more follicles, the more babies, and sometimes a flock of children is not ideal;-)

i would just wait and watch and remember that the injections make you as likely as everone else to get pregnant - about 33% per cycle. so it may tkae a few months, but be patient, and it will happen.

Thank you, Everyone! I am feeling more secure about this whole thing!!! I go in for my IUI on Saturday morning, so say a prayer, and I will let know what happens!!!!! Thanks againg.

Jenni

You got my prayer! I will be checking the forums for news!

I remember how nervous I was before my first IUI. I have a cervix that is diffcult to reach soemtimes and makes speculum exams uncomfortable. I say my cervix likes to play hide and seek. Anyway, it was okie dokie. Some women cramp a bit, but I had not complaints. The vaginal ultrasounds around ovulation were the most uncomfortable part for me.

Take care!
