A number of questions have bubbled up recently from Forum-ites who are interested in their children's fitness.

Just wanted to list out a few good reading resources for parents of children (both prepubescent and postpubescent), that are written by researchers and trainers at the MS and PhD level:

IDEA Fitness Journal, March 2005 issue (contains three complete articles on developing fitness programs for children, children's nutrition and the distinct physiology of children's bodies at various stages of development and how that impacts exercise choices);

Faigenbaum,A.D and Wescott, Wayne L. 2000. "Strength and Power for Young Athletes". Champaign, IL: Human Kinetics (www.humankinetics.com)

Malina, R.M. and Bouchard, C. 1991. "Growth, Maturation and Physical Activity". Champaign, IL: Human Kinetics

Strength and Conditioning Journal (contains the National Strength and Conditioning Association's 1996 position statement and literature review on youth resistance training)

Pediatric Exercise Science (peer-reviewed journal)

American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)'s Health and Fitness Journal

Sale, D.G. 1989. "Strength Training in Children." In C.V. Gisolfi and D.R. Lamb, (Eds.), "Perspectives in Exercise Science and Sports Medicine, Volume 2: Youth, Exercise and Sports". Benchmark Press; Indianapolis, IN.
