In search of ideas

I will be leading a very informal meant to be entirely about fun "discovery interest group" at a professional conference I will be attending which will include people from all over my home state.

There will be various topics which range from tattoos, photography, cross stitching (geh!), and the like. I decided to take on fitness. I am really clueless about the world of running or rock climbing or other areas relating to fitness and I am trying to think about how to best approach this to cover a broad area. Since this is last minute I won't have time to assemble goody bags and all that hoo-ha but wonder about any handouts, websites or other ideas you all might have that I could put together since I really don't have anything to do all day but play table tennis in my bathrobe.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Beavs,

Well...I'll use this as yet another opportunity to mention CrossFit. :+

They've got a lot of stuff on their website http://www.crossfit.com . There's a free download of the CrossFit Journal http://www.crossfit.com/cf-download/CFJ-trial.pdf with a feature article called "What is Fitness" and another on fitness as a measure of health. Either article could be a good staring point for a discussion/debate on fitness.

I don't know what the copyright implications are if you wanted to reproduce it for handouts, but I'd bet the folks who created it would be pretty responsive if you asked them.

Gmaps pedometer rocks! I've used that to map out several routes around my house, as well as a 400M track around my yard.

Hey Beavs,

That's a lot of work, good for you!!
It would be hard to tackle everything, maybe talk a bif about the area of cross training: Factors that affect fitness levels etc. When i'm asked, i say

There are 4 areas or types that fitness activities fit, Cardio, strength, flexibilty, and rest/recovery...All of these are important, need to be fit into plan...

Maybe give examples of types of activities under each of those...ie: yoga..flex, different types of yoga, blah blah.

Goody bags..well, halloween is coming, what about mini chocolate bars :)

Does that help? How type A am i?
Steph

Beavs,

You could also list some upcoming 5Ks in the area and on the other side of the handout, provide a basic Couch to 5K training program. (Lots of great beginner info on RW as a previous poster mentioned).

Thank you all! These are some really good ideas. Now all I have to do is get my head on straight and start working on the project!
