I'm so sad about the upcoming boxing workouts

I have a skin problem & any trauma to my skin causes it to break out. I took boxing lessons about 10 years ago & my hands, which were at the time feminine & pretty, totally broke out & never recovered.

The sad part was I really, really enjoyed boxing & it is truly a fabulous workout. I'm so bummed that my favorite instructor is coming out w/a workout I'd really love but I won't be able to use them. :(

Laura - surely there'll be a way you can modify to take out the impact. You do kb, right? Maybe there will be a way that you can do the punching with no impact to your hands, like in kickboxing workouts! Let's think positive!

Well, I am hoping some of them don't involve a heavy bag & I will be able to use them. But a heavy bag workout without the heavy bag would be pretty much useless. The real work in a heavy bag workout comes from the impact of hitting the bag.

Have you ever done anything like it before? It is so much fun & so freakin hard! I remember my instructor making me flurry on the bag for 2 minutes--he'd set a stopwatch--& I swear by the end of 2 minutes I'd be gasping for breath & dripping with sweat!

I had to quit b/c of what it was doing to my hands (and BTW even those without a skin condition like psoriasis will first develop blisters & then callouses--you should see my ex hubby's hands--no matter what kind of gloves you use).

Anyway, I hated quitting but I hated what it was doing to my hands even more. And like I said, my hands never recovered. In fact, it is now the only place on my body where I still have the wretched rash. Psoriasis sucks. x(

Laura,

I'm with you on the psoriasis. Any source of trauma, especially on the knuckles, elbows, knees, etc., will turn to patches of psoriasis . AND if I'm lucky and it actually goes away, it is permanently discolored. So, even at my clearest moments, I'm nothing but a big polka dotted mess of purple and white. My hands were NEVER feminine ane pretty, though, so I don't lose much there :).

The boxing is out for me for several reasons, so I'm pretty disappointed, too. This will be the first thing Cathe puts out that I just won't be getting.

The good point for me is that I haven't ever tried boxing, so at least I don't know what I'm missing!!

HI Laura,
Can you explain how boxing caused Psoriasis? What am I missing? Sorry to be such a pain, but I am really looking forward to these workouts too and don't want yucky blisters or anything. Thanks, dmd

Oh you don't have to worry about getting it--it's a genetic condition. Unless someone in your family has it you're free & clear (pun intended).

Sara, have you tried any of the biologic treatments? I went on Enbrel last December & it has truly been a miracle. I had strep throat last fall & it caused this horrible break out--I was 95% covered, the bottoms of my feet fell of in chunks, I couldn't really wear shoes, could barely walk & certainly couldn't exercise. The Enbrel had my feet cleared up w/in a week & the rest of me w/in 6 weeks. I hear Humira will give you similar results--that's what the winner of America's Next Top Model uses! ;-)

Unfortunately though, while it has helped my hands, they're the only part of my body that never totally cleared up.

You can do boxing workouts without a heavy bag. I used to do them with weighted gloves which add some resistance, really develops the arms!:)

Laura, we need to get you one of those bozo the clown kid punching thingies. I hear it keeps the hands just lovely ;)

I hope it does work where you can modify it somehow. I'm sure it is frustrating.
