If your not a runner what do you do instead?

When following a rotation and Cathe has a run inserted what do you do if your not a runner?

This may sound silly but I am afraid of running, I think it looks so cool but I do not have the gusto to go do it. I would like to do it and sometimes I start and it just seems so darn hard. I guess I just need to suck it up and try.

Not silly at all, I was afraid of running myself when I started.
I tried running about 6 months ago, I was able to get past the brunt of it, but within a few weeks I was going to the doctors for my knees...Now I would have to say, I am afraid to start again. I always see everyone running, down the beach and over the summer months, I was so jealous! My kness can't take the heat of it though.

Now when Cathe throws in running, I just use one of my cardio tapes to subsitute!
Take care...Give it a try and see how it works out for you.

In the beginning I would always do a cardio step in place of a run. I couldn't run a mile at a time and it was such a dread factor. After two months with Cathe I gave the treadmill a try again. I could run for two miles no problem (thank you Cathe:7 ). My cardio endurance improved so much with her HIIT workouts. (LoMax, Imax's) I was very surprised. My knees no longer ache and the dread factor is gone.

Thanks for the input. I'm thinking I could sub kickbox or hi/lo for a run, but I need to get over my fear of running.

There's no fear if you start out s-l-o-w. The majority of people who quit start out going too far, too fast.

If you're interested in running, I recommend "Galloway's Book on Running." IMO, Jeff Galloway has the most sensible approach to running I've ever seen, one which emphasizes listening to your body and incorporating walk breaks into any running program. The book has a lot of anecdotes about people finishing with their personal bests in marathons because they take a 1-2 minute walk break every mile or so.

The one thing I love about this approach is it takes the machismo out of running. Once I gave myself permission to take a break every few minutes, I learned to LOVE it.

Anyway, as I said, the key is to start out slowly - if you're already into walking, maybe incorporate 30-60 seconds of slow running into your routine and gradually increasing the time you run. It's all up to you.

Good luck!

I used to run but the knees were not happy about that. So, now I power walk, ellipitical, spin, bike, or swim instead of running.

Jenn.

I'm afraid of running, so I use Cathe's step or cardio, treadmill, stair climber, a stability ball w/o, walking as fast as I can outside, (when the weather is good), Tai Chi, aerobic yoga, and boxing. There is plenty to do for cardio.

The idea is to die young as late as possible.

Another one afraid of running here. I have a terrific fast-walking routine I do on the treadmill, varying the inclines and speeds to my favorite songs on my MP3 player. I just love it.

Power walk, bike, swim, use the rebounder. The idea is cardio, so I do cardio. I just don't enjoy running anymore because of flat feet.

I pounded the pavement for 15 years and got to the point where putting on my running shoes filled me with such dread that I vowed never to run again. Now when I do a rotation that calls for running I either do a high intenstity cardio like MIC, an IMAX, or treadmill intervals where I power walk and interval run for a minute or two. The treadmill is so much nicer to my knees.
