If I only did firewalkers every day.......

BAM

......do you think my outer thighs would eventually tone up? Because of muscular pains, it's hard for me to consistently work my legs. I'm trying to find exercises that may tone up my legs without creating strain on my back. Firewalkers seem to be o.k. so if I did them daily and perhaps several times throughout the day, do you think it would help tone up that oh so lovely outer thigh area? Thanks for your thoughts.

Hi BAM - The problem you may run into with doing only firewalkers every day is that you may end up with muscular imbalances that could further aggravate your back...these are kinda focused on the quad and outer thigh. You definitely want to work your hamstrings and inner thigh areas, too. Are there any other exercises that don't cause you pain?

Hi Gayle. I am in the process of finding other exercises that are less irritating. I totally agree about finding balance. I'm going to be trying some exercises with the stability ball that might be o.k. So do you think the firewalkers would cover toning up the outer thigh if I did them regularly? Thanks.

Not too sure about this. What I tell my personal training clients is that exercises that work the abductor (gluteous medius) is actually on the top, outer portion of the hips. Not to say that the outer thigh doesn't get involved (as does the IT band). IMHO I would say that if you want to tone, keep at it, but also include a very narrow stance squat (with higher reps and lower weight). That will hit the outer thigh more effectively. If you have trouble with your back, try them on a Smith machine (if you have access to one).

Thanks Laura. I don't have access to a Smith machine but I do have a Power Glide which is similar to a Total Gym. I could do the narrow stance squats on that. What do you think?

Can you do floor exercises for your inner thigh without discomfort? You can still use a band for resistance similar to the way you do with firewalkers. Tie it tightly around your ankles, lie on your side, keep the bottom leg straight & press it upward.

And don't forget to do it to the other side. ;)

Thanks Laura. Yes, those exercises sound doable, uh, that is up until you mentioned having to do the other side! :p

Go for it! It can't hurt to try it. Be sure to add some weight for resistance. :)
