I put that dog room together to give my younger dogs a place of their own to sleep because they were hogging my bed and giving my BF and me backaches. The first week, the puppy whined when I closed the door and the older one barked....but we're in the middle of week #2 now, and they go in quietly and stay quiet MOST of the night. Cricket (the adolescent) starts barking every morning around 5:15 to let me know she has to "go". My old man still sleeps on the bed with us, but there's enough room for the 3 of us when my BF is there (not every night, he is never over when my DH is home....that's just a bad example) and when it's just me...it's very nice.
So here's where it became a GREAT idea. Buster the puppy is still housebreaking and because I'm gone for 8-9 hours a day, I don't crate. I was putting him and Cricket in the kitchen and gating the exits. It's a big space, so he'd go in the back of the room and make a mess. Laminate flooring, not tough to clean, but still - who wants to mop everyday? I started putting them in their bedroom when I leave...and since they've adopted it as their den, there hasn't been one mess in there. Not during the day, not overnight. And his housebreaking seems to be progressing much better now. The room smells like dogs, even with 3 air fresheners, but I'm just tickled with how it all worked out. They're not even destructive in there a bit.
