I have a stupid clutzy injury

I feel so silly, but I can't work out tommorrow. I have this garbage can under my kitchen sink on wheel- it sticks sometimes. I often have to use my foot to shove it back in. Well it was dinner, my baby is in her highchair crying for food, my three year old is begging for food, I'm having a stressed day and I do my usual shove with the foot to push the garbage can back in- BUT instead of a gentle shove, my foot betrays me and ends up kicking it with force, and my second toe land right on the metal rail of the thingy on wheels and I feel this intense sharp pain and feel my toenail crack way at the bottom and my toe is throbbing. I fall onto the tile in pain with tears running down my cheeks- my 3 year old comes over to me and says "mommy I'm hungry- where is my dinner"- nothing like sympathy!!!

Anyway, after about 5 minutes in shock on the floor, I got the courage to take off my sock, and the nail is cracked way at the bottom, lots of blood, and my toe is very swollen and black and blue. Could I have broken it? I'm upset no step for a few days. Even my stationary bike will hurt since it will rub in my shoe. Any suggestions?

My husband comes home and my son demonstrates for him how I hurt myself even pretending to fall down- at least now my son is acting concerned for me :)

Yes I feel silly, and yes I feel like a clutz. Of all the injurys I've read about here- being beaten up by the kitchen garbage can is not one of them.

Don't feel too bad. The other day my best friend told me about how when she was on vacation she fell down taking off her pants and hurt her ankle. So it could be worse.

That's a tough one. I'd have it looked at, but generally speaking, if you can wiggle the toe, it's probably not broken. My granny used to break her baby toe ALL THE TIME, so we got to know a lot about toes. More than we wanted to, frankly. But if you have insurance, better safe than sorry. Because if it is broken and it heals incorrectly, then you could have a problem.

As for working out, cardio may have to wait. But you can do all kinds of upper body weight training to keep things rolling. And If you can do it painlessly, you could do some lower body weight training, just without shoes on. (Be careful not to drop a weight on your toe, God forbid!) But you may just have to bite the bullet and go without cardio for a bit while you heal.

Here's a wild shot...if you belonged to a health club, they sometimes have those upper body cycling machines for people in wheelchairs. Gets your heart rate up with just the arm movements. It's pretty cool, actually. I used it once when I worked at a club and had sprained my ankle doing laundry while getting ready to go out on a date with a total hottie. Fell down a flight of stairs, laundry sprawled all over, neighbor had to help me hop back upstairs....and I still went on the date! I wrapped my foot up, put a shoe in, bundled up (it was about 20 below out, you gotta love Chicago) and braved sidewalk ice with that ankle just for the date. Ok, it was totally worth it, but still pathetic. Spraining your ankle while doing laundry is just totally lame. So really, don't feel bad.

Take care of that toe! You don't want an angry piggy on your hands. Or foot.

Hi AmyNicole,
I'm sorry to hear of your injury. I agree with Lex, I would have it looked at by a doctor. I have learned the hard way that injuries left unchecked tend to get much worse. You might save yourself alot of trouble by getting it checked out. Anyway, I hope you feel better soon. Have a great weekend.

Lex, I think your right- injuring your akle while removing pants is worse than kicking the trash can! Good news, although it is still painful and purple/black I CAN move it now and it is not throbbing anymore so it looks like it is not broken. I don't have access to a gym, but I think I'll do a firm weight tape- most of it should be ok exept the lunges, those I won't be able to do. Of course since it hurts to wear shoes, I'll be extra careful to keep those weights away from my toes!! and of course abs tonight, take tommorow off and Sunday use my stationary bike- I think that would be easier on the toe than stepping. Hopefully within a week I'll get back with my cathe step tape. I may go through withdraw!

RE: Lex, WHAT MAN would be worth that??!!!?

ha-aha. that's a riot. Seriously, though, there's not much to do with a broken toe. No high impact. period.

RE: Lex, WHAT MAN would be worth that??!!!?

Oh my gosh lex, I just read about the date part. Somehow I missed that when I read your response the first time. That is really funny. I hope you are ok. So did anything come out of the date? A second date etc..???

RE: Lex, WHAT MAN would be worth that??!!!?

Ah, the infamous "sprained ankle debacle." Let's just say it was a VERY GOOD DATE and I'm sooooo glad I hopped out and went anyway. I may have looked really desperate and pathetic, but it worked in my favor. Oh man, just remembering this is making me smile from ear to ear. It was so long ago, about 7 years, but I remember it like it was this morning.

And believe you me, he was well worth it. And I had just gotten out of a bad 3 year deal and hadn't had sex in over a year (don't ask, long boring story) so there was no way I was passing up the date with the tall, built, good looking downhill skiier. Do you guys have any idea what kind of thighs those guys have? Yikes. I hope I didn't offend anyone, but you seemed like you wanted some good dirt. So there it is, or some of it anyway!

And there were several more dates. Oh, those were fun too, even if I wasn't injured anymore. But I don't want to turn the boards here into a trashy romance novel! ;)

RE: Lex, WHAT MAN would be worth that??!!!?

Hey, don't worry lex, glad you had some fun :)

I've been married for 6 years and have 2 small kids, but your story brought back memories of that adrenaline of good dates :)

Still, I'm very happy to have my husband.

RE: Lex, WHAT MAN would be worth that??!!!?

I agree, I wouldn't trade my life and my man now for that dating life again. It had its moments, but all in all, I prefer the friendship and companionship from being with him for 7 years. Nothing beats that.

But it brought back some adrenaline feelings for me, too! Thanks for asking and giving me that memory.
