I have a confession

I've never done anything w/a high step. I don't even know what the workouts consist of. I've never done a sculpting class either.

So I'm looking at the road trip schedule & I see there's a body sculpting class & a high step class. Should I just bag it, or give them a try? How much weight do you use for body sculpting? Is it high reps/sets? Should I use like 75% of my max?

And what about high step? Is it cardio? Strength training? If I've never done it before will I have trouble keeping up?

Maximus -

I have a high step but I've only used it for L&G, BC and other non-cardio workouts. I've never done any of the high step cardio workouts either! I thought about skipping this class only because it's so early on Sunday and I know I'll be operating on little to no sleep but I don't want to miss out on a single opportunity to train with Cathe and my Cathe buddies so I'm looking at it as broadening my fitness experience! Can't hurt to try - even if it's for the first time, right?!? :)

I have all of Cathe's high step workouts and have never done them either. I use the high step for leg workouts but never seem to be able to bring myself to do the high step workouts. Maybe there's a little fear there, I don't know for sure. Guess I better try it too before the road trip!

I haven't done a high step cardio workout either (well, I did the beginner one, but I don't think it counts). I would imagine a sculpting class would be lighter weight, higher rep. I'm sure she'll let us know:) I'm taking the opportunity to do every single class with Cathe that I can, because you don't get this chance often:)

Step Ups is my absolute favorite move. HSTA is my favorite DVD for that matter. Starting out, I used what Cathe uses in the workouts. Now, I use more than twice the weight in *some* w/o's. Ex./ L&G she uses 15lbs. I'll use 35lbs.

You can lower the step to one or two riser and use it for cardio.

As for body sculpting, I'm not sure. I would think moderate weight is used for higher reps.

Go on... take the class! I'm sure youll have no trouble keeping up.

OK. So what you guys are saying is high step can be cardio OR strength training OR both. Hmmmmmm.

IA about training w/Cathe, & IA about it being awfully early on a Sunday morning. So I'm torn. I'll probably do it, but this'll be one class I WILL want to be in the back row LOL.

So what about the body sculpting? Someone please give me a rundown.

Hi Maximus,

To more directly answer your question about the high step workouts, they are circuit workouts. The cardio is short and intense (1-2 minutes), and the weight segments are high-rep/low weight/no rest. She usually sticks in some compound weight work in each circuit to keep your heart rate up. And leg presses. I find with the HS workouts that even though the pure cardio segments are short, my heart rate stays up quite high throughout these workouts. And they're fun. I really, really like HS workouts. They seem to fly by quite fast.

Cheers,
Sandra

Ah, thanks Sandra, that's the info I was looking for. I guess I'll just go ahead & take the class using very light weights, especially since I plan on doing all my weight training during the week anyway, so it's not like I'll be missing any of my more intense workouts.

Thanks guys for the info.

Hi Maximus! I wouldn't worry. The cardio involving the high step isn't complicated at all. I plan on using only 75% of my max to fully enjoy myself! LOL We use the high step for only certain strength training exercises. You'll be able to do it. See you soon! Kathy:D

PS: We use the high step for: inverted shoulder presses, side to side pushups, tricep dips, leg presses, working our abductors & adductors + doing cardio in a circuit fashion. You'll like it!
