My copart at work came in sick a week ago Friday, was off all last week except Friday when he was sneezing and wheezing and coughing, and now I seem to have caught it!!!! Somehow I've wound up w/ tonsilitis at 29 years old!!! GRRRR!!!!! I feel craptastic. Been under the weather since Thurs getting worse, finally went to the Dr today, I couldn't take it anymore. I figured after I almost dropped a 40 lb barbell yesterday when the world started to swim when I was standing up from a squat, that perhaps I really was sick. I was trying so hard to ignore it. The 101 fever prob should have tipped me off. Now, I don't know for sure I got it from said guy at work, but I haven't been around anyone else who was sick. Stay home if you've got the sick-buggies!!!!! Of course I went to work under the weather Thurs and Fri, thinking maybe it was just a cold, so I should prob heed my own advice, but I hate being sick!!!! Just had to vent.

Oh, I am so sorry you are sick! I cannot stand when people are sick and still want to shake your hand!! ahhhh

Well, I hope you feel better soon! If you go to a gym to lift those barbells, don't do it right now - those places are hot beds for germs.

HANG IN THERE!!!

Hi,

It's disrespectful to co-workers to come to work sick and spreading germs.

This can be applied to kids in schools too. It is disrespectful to teachers and peers to send sick kids to school. It shows a definite disregard for others. Many kids are unable to manage their germs properly and there ends up being a lot of collateral sickness.

dh had some viral infection last week. after 3 days he tried to go back to work, i actually tipped off the boss and he sent him home. i was angry with dh for that. even though the college kids are not there, its still a kitchen. ppl who work with food, or just cleaning the kitchen for the summer, should not be there.

i agree with someone who mention kids being sent to school sick. i never chance it with viola, i don't care how well she learned to cover her mouth or carry tissues for her nose LOL. there have been some nasty bugs around and we shouldn't want to get anybody else sick.

Which is why I hate the perfect attendance award. It promotes this.

I recall a chronically sick (or so it seemed) coworker who decided to swing by my office for a visit not telling me that she had strep throat. Soon I was sick and out of work for two days with what turned out be strep throat in the middle of a summer heat wave. x(

Well, I'm one of those people who goes to work sick. All of my sick time and most of DH's are used to take care of our kids when they are sick, as well as taking them to doctor/dentist appointments. Until my work lets me use vacation days to take off to take care of my sick kids then I will come to work sick as a dog. 5 days of sick leave doesn't stretch very far when my DS was hospitalized with pneumonia for 3 days this past winter and the numerous doctor appointments I had to make for DD's ear infections, or the day DD had surgery for tubes to be put in her ears. I'd rather my kids not go to daycare or school sick. I'm not sorry I go to work sick because my boss is not a family man and doesn't understand why I need to take off when my kids are sick.

Kristi is right that many people feel pressured to come to work regardless of what condition they are in and that's too bad. Many workplace boss's are too short sighted to see that spreading germs amongst everyone are a real detriment to productivity as opposed to one sick person home sipping ginger ale.

Yeah, it sucks...but if you don't have any sick time left - what are you gonna do? One of ours had bronchitis and was still coming to work last week. It was gross. And she can work from home too, so that's not cool. We have that option - many people don't.

I go to work sick too. I have asthma and will sometimes get 3 colds or bouts of bronchitis in a winter and I'm not going to call in sick every month. Besides when do you draw the line when it can take 2-3 weeks to stop coughing. Besides people are contagious sometimes when they don't have symtoms yet or aren't sure if they're getting sick and by then it's already been spread around.

I hate it when people call in sick because they have the sniffles.

My biggest pet peeve is not people who work with me coming in sick (although I'd rather they didn't, but understand not having enough sick days) but people I work with bringing their sick KIDS to work with them. Sorry but your kid doesn't work here, they shouldn't be allowed at work at all, ESPECIALLY not when they are sick. If you've used all your vacation and sick days too bad, stay home with no pay. Sorry to be ugly about it but it happens way too often at my work and the children that are brought to work are not as considerate with thier germs as thier parents.

<I hate it when people call in sick because they have the sniffles.>

Actually I much prefer that to having them come in and share what could be a rather unpleasant illness. While I can appreciate the predicament many face on some level I resent when they make their "problem" mine. While my coworker makes the case that she has children and uses her sick time on them I would greatly appreciate her keeping her illness home rather than pass it on to me as I am a caretaker for someone with severe medical issues. A good comprise has been to tell her to stay the heck in her office and don't come out unless she has to use the restroom ;-)

I am a teacher, and kids come to school sick all of the time!

They throw up in the morning before school, and the parents STILL send them. I work in an inner city, and there are many single parents who have to go to work.

It is a sad case. I feel so bad for the kids here.

As for my immunity - it is great! I have a great one, and I hope it stays this way when I choose to have my own kids at home someday!

:)

In reading through this, it stands out to me that people come to work sick, because they cannot afford to do otherwise. At my work, we are allowed 2 sick days a quarter. So if you have the flu and are out 3 days, and then your kid gets the flu, you are in a world of hurt. No one stays home for the sniffles, a cold, a cough, everyone comes unless they are on their death bed, because most have to use sick time for appointments, or kids stuff. I don't see anyway around it, people have to come to work if they don't have the time to use.

Fortunately I have not been sick for 4 years, not even a sniffle and my kids are old enough that if they are sick, they can stay home and sleep without me. But I feel bad for the people with young children trying to juggle their sick time between the spouses. It is not easy to be a working parent, so I understand when they come in sick.
