I got my results

I have gestational diabetes. Yesterday I was freaking out and today I am a little better. The dr. called me at the exact time I was picking up my new truck(bumber). They are sending me to a diabetic counselor and I will have to draw my blood after every meal and in the morning. That will happen for a week and if diet cant control the sugar level than I will need insulin. The good news is I failed 2 out of the 4 tests so it was not a complete failure. Thankfully I had high amniotic fluid at my last visit because my dr. said he would not have sent me out because I past the 1st test i took 6 weeks ago. The scary thing in that if my sugar is not under control at the time of birth I have an increased risk of a still born(I almost passed out when he said that). I will see the specialist tomorrow and every week from here on in so I will keep you posted.

Sorry to hear about your gestational diabetes. I had it with my DS and had to go to the nutritionist & do the blood check thing after every meal like you will. I whole heartedly agree that it was no fun, but at least when you get to hold your little one it will make it all worth the hassle. Was your doctor trying to scare you into making sure you keep your levels normal? A couple of mothers I know could not regulate their blood sugar by diet alone so they had to get shots daily. My doctor never told me about the risk of a still born baby, just that the baby could get very big which was why I was enduced. Good luck!

Mary, don't let them scare you about a still born. Doctors just word things the worst. I believe the concern is more injuries developing from an extra large fetus being delivered. I passed the test since my fasting level was ok, but my 1 hour was higher than the number needed to fail and my 2 hour was near the failing number. I have cut out my am yogurt, have limited fruits, limited pasta and rice(my old staples) and have increased my egg and cheese conception. I have been snacking on broccoli. Since I have changed my diet, my weight gain slowed and baby's size leveled off. In other words don't panic!

Thank you for the support. I am going to call the specialist in a hour to see if they had any cancellations. I will feel better if I can be more proactive with my food. I am so greatful that I am very aware of my food choices when I am not pregnant and I am used to eating clean anyway. Do you guys use splenda when you are preggo? and do you drink any diet sodas?

I agree don't let all the things drs. say scare you. I had GS with my second daughter and they never told me that. I just knew her chances of being bigger were greater and that her blood sugars could be off when born (they weren't). It was tough and I felt like I was doing something wrong when I would check my blood and it was high after a meal and I would get so down on myself. BUT it is not the mommy and what she is doing (unless she isn't eating smart and checking her blood) but our Hormones due to pregnancy!!!! Please, please keep that in mind! You made the statement you only failed 2 of the 4 tests -- YOU DID NOT FAIL. You could not have done anything differently! I wish you patience and health!!

Forgot to add about Splenda and diet soda. I had rootbeer floats in the evening using Low Carb ice cream and diet rootbeer and my dietician was fine w/that. I also used sugar free Quik in my milk (which I could not drink much of b/c of the sugar). I also ate tons of peanut butter (peanut butter and SF jelly in my oatmeal for bfast every morning!)

Good Luck!

sorry about the test result, but these other ladies are right. this is simply your body and your pregnancy, not you as a person or a mother. i know what you mean about wanting to be proactive. you will feel better once you talk to the dietician and get that control. and as you said, you are used to clean eating, so that much farther ahead of the game.

good luck and try to keep your spirits up. you are on the home stretch.
