RE: i don't like this trend.... but yet another sad pos...

This is sooo sad. I actually cried when I read about this.:-(

RE: i don't like this trend.... but yet another sad pos...

Very sad but the owners loved him so I'm sure they made thr right decision. Poor baby :(

I may be thought of as the most heartless one here - the horse should have been euthanised months ago.

I believe he was being kept alive for the potential stud fees. His career as a racehorse was over and there was no other reason to keep him alive except as a stud.

I am very glad he is out of pain.

Ugh...sooooo sad. I live in Philly and was devastated when he got hurt in his last race. So sad!

Susan,

I don't think you are heartless. You know more about this stuff than I do. I didn't even think about that.

RE: i don't like this trend.... but yet another sad pos...

You most certainly are NOT heartless, Susan. That poor horse should never have come off the track. We are currently in the middle of a similar situation, albeit not as tragic in circumstance, in which we are realizing that we should have gone with our gut and made the decision earlier in the case of one of our ponies. We allowed her to fight as she was in no pain but her prognosis of a comfortable, normal life is bleak, at best. Is she in pain now...no, but we cannot allow her to live the rest of her life in a stall. That's not living. I felt the same way about poor Bobby (Barbaro). Was there a chance of putting "Humpty Dumpty" back together again...yes, although the odds were definitely stacked against him. However, his quality of life would be severely compromised. Please don't take this as armchair quarterbacking. Working and living with these creatures we're very aware of how delicate their bodies can be. Even if the heart and will are there and ready to fight, often their bodies just don't allow for it. Complications can be severe.

Having said all that, my thoughts and prayers are with his entire team as I wouldn't have wished this emotional roller coaster on anyone. I am just so very relieved that he is finally free to race all the great champions that have gone before him. God bless, Bobby...

Take care,
Wendi

Wendi -

Keeping you and your pony in my thoughts. Horses will break your heart one way or another, won't they?

Stupid animals - I love 'em so much...sigh.

Oh, thank you so much Susan. They do seem to be on a perpetual suicide mission from the day they're born, don't they? That is said very tongue in cheek BTW :p.

Some horses seem to be more hell-bent than others, though. (rolls eyes)

i don't think you are heartless..... i actually may even agree.... (and definitely agree that it's a good thing for him to be out of pain)

I disagree that they only kept him alive for stud fees. Whereas a lot of race horse owners don't give a rats behind about their horses, for them horses are just a commodity. However, from everything I have heard about the family who owned him, they really loved that horse and wanted to let him live out his life on their farm.

I have owned several horses and I would have done exactly the same thing had it happened to one of my horses. There was a chance that he could have made it and he seemed to pull through. I think it was worth a try, as long as he didn't seem to be suffering. For a while it looked pretty promising and it is very sad that he took a turn for the worse. I think the owners did the right thing! However, just throwing up the hands in the air and stating "oh well, quality of life is gone" doesn't cut it for me either.

In general I find horse racing a horrible sport anyway, letting young horses whose bodies are not matured yet race time and time again, is just asking for injury or worse.
