I am so nervous!

Help!!!! I am so nervous because I am planning on telling my boss that I am pregnant today and NOT coming back next year. (I am a teacher) I am due in August...Do I just come out and say it right away?? ahhh

Good luck! I still need to tell my boss & co-workers, but I'm trying to hold out until near the end of this month. I hope I can wait that long. With my first pregnancy a co-worker/friend told everyone I was pregnant at her going away party. She asked me if it was okay first.

Sorry I can't help you with the wording. I'm sure the right words will come to you. I guess you could always start off with, "I have the best news to share with you..." and then state how much you will miss your kids and your job. I'm positive the right words will come to you. Best of luck! Tell us how it goes.

I DID IT! He was so nice! Ahhhhhhh, what a relief. Thank you for your advice, because that is EXACLTY how I started to conversation!! Anyway, it is amazing how I sometimes make a mountain out of a mole hill!

Hi.

I told my boss I was pg right away but have YET to discuss anything further with him. I do not plan on returning to work but I am not telling him or my job this yet. I am taking my maternity leave and will call at the end of it to let them know that I have decided not to return to work. This is the advice I was given by several people. If you simply resign, as I was going to do, then you will not be able to collect maternity benefits. Please, ofcourse, do not take my word for this in your situation and your state (I am in NJ and I think all states are a little different). Please research it before you do anything but this is what I have been advised.

Edited to say: EEECK! Looks like I posted this too late! Sorry! We must have been posting at the same time!

Have a great work out!

No, you didn't post too late! Thank you! I am also going to wait to let them know definately (I know that I am NOT coming back either!) When are you officially leaving? Do you know? My situation is a bit easy in that regard because when school ends is when I will finish! But, I do need to let them know when contracts come out in March...

Are you as excited as I am to be making this HUGE life change? Sometimes it hits me and other times I still do not believe it! Anyway, thanks for your thoughts...

Congratulations! I'm glad it went well!! I'm a little nervous about telling my boss, but I will be going back to work after my 8-week maternity leave is up. I'm sure he will take the news okay, but he is always worried about how it will effect HIM. The only person it will directly effect is my office manager. However I do still plan to come into work to keep up on paperwork about 2-3 times a week like I did right after my first pregnancy. I really like my office manager and don't want her to get stressed out in my absence. She would not have anyone else to pick up the slack.

That would be great to work 2 or 3 days per week! That is a nice set-up to have...Let us know when you tell your boss. And, use the advice you gave me!! It worked!

Jenni,

Hi. I am not sure exactly when I am leaving. I am going to take my Dr's advice and this has not come up yet so I really have no clue. Leaving a month prior to your due date seems to be common, but to me, that seems like overkill. I'm thinking 2 weeks prior if it's okay with my doctor and barring any unforseen problems, ofcourse. That would put me working into the first week of May pretty much. I have to know what's going on a minimum of 30 days prior to the date I plan to leave though because that is the requirement for maternity leave that is stipulated by my job. That's fine...I have another couple of months to figure it out then.

I am excited, I am nervous, I am scared to death! lol Every day, every moment, every second it's a different feeling that I get! I just know it will be wonderful though! I am not saying it will be easy as it's going to be alot fo work and a HUGE adjustment and change in several ways but I am sooo looking forward to it!

I am going to be looking for a part time position that I can hold from home so that I can still contribute some income with out having to worry about childcare/commuting, etc. My DH and I were discussing this last night. I won't want to do this right away as I will need some time to adjust to everything, but once I am settled in, I will start looking. If I can't find anything then we will just learn to live with out the extra $. I'm sure we'll make it work either way.

Have a great work out!

Actually it is not as great as you think. While I am working 2-3 days per week for probably 2-4 hours at a time even some weekends, I will still be on my maternity leave, but I will be taking the baby into work with me for that short amount of time. Following my 8 week maternity leave I will be back to working my regular 40 hours a week job.

Jenni,

I'm glad your news was well received!

I told my employers at the 3 month mark, and I felt comfortable about it as there always seems to be one teacher pregnant every year, and so the school is used to getting replacements!

As far as decsions about going back to work later, I'm still undecided as to when. My husband is considering parental leave if he ends up without a job once my maternity leave is over (here in Quebec, either parent can take the parental leave once the 22 weeks of maternity leave ends). Will we need 2 salaries? Will I be able to feel comfortable about daycare? Will I be pregnant with another in a year's time? So many decisons to make. It's hard to know now. I'll just keep my options open!

Jennifer V,

You get 22 weeks of maternity leave in Canada!?!? Oh my gosh, that is wonderful! Here in the good ol' USA it basically ranges from 6-12 weeks. I personally qualify for the bare minimum of 6...can we say WHOOPIE!? LOL

Have a great work out!

why, oh why, does this conversation have to be so hard??? it's one of the happiest times in our lives yet we have to face a company that is only concerned with the company.
I am glad to hear all went well with your conversation..;o)

You are right...For me, I was DEFINATELY the one who made it hard on myself. He (boss)was thrilled about it while I was worried and almost sorry...I have to take the responsibility on that I was worrying for no reason. You made a great point in your post!

I am so nervous about this too! I am TTC and work in a really small office (just five of us total). I can not tell anyone here I am trying and I work with two women who I am friendly with. I will try and keep it secret as long as I can. I am pretty sure they would let me stay to the end but I would not want to risk them firing me. I do not plan to work after delivery.
I could not do the maternity thing and then not come back because I would just fell way too awful. We are just a private little firm and the boss man is amazing.
It is so nice to know I am not the only one in such a situation. I just really hope I could talk about TTC. It is so hard to keep quiet about something that is so exciting to me!

Hi LeighAnn!

I can definately understand why you would feel bad about going out on maternity leave and then not coming back when you work for such a small office of close-knit people. I would feel badly too if that were the case.

I know it can be easier said than done, but try not to stress out about the stuff that you don't have to worry about yet...It can affect your chances of conceiving. Try to stay as calm as possible. When the time comes, you will get through it!:)

Good luck with everything!
Keep us posted!

Have a great work out!
