How to purchase barbells

I thinking of purchasing barbells. Any shopping tips, i.e. what/where did you buy yours? How much weight did you get. Anything I need to know about barbells (I haven't a clue!). Thanks.

Mine were purchased through Walmart and delivered to my home. The s/h were as much as the product is. I got 2-10's and 2-5s. SNM recommended them to me, and Cathe uses the exact same ones in some of her workouts.
I like them cause of the clips.
It's called the US Weight 55 lbs aerobic weight set. Link to sports, then to weights. It's for $19.66.

If you're not set on having new, shop around at a used sports store, like a "Play it Again Sports" Weights don't damage very easily, just give the bar a thorough check, and you can clean them up with Lysol or Chlorox cleaners if you're worried about germs. You can save a lot of money buying them used. That said, I've heard WalMart and Target have pretty good sets online for about $20, but you'll bite the big one on the shipping on those. As far as rubber coated weights vs metal weights, heavy bar vs light bar, and screw on vs clips, that's personal preference. Mine has metal plates, which I like, I like the "clink" sound they make when you put the weights on, makes me feel strong. I have the screw on ends, which are more time consuming than the clips, but only a few seconds and I'm paranoid about the clips not being able to hold the weight (yes, I know that's weird and they're not just going to fall off. I also have a heavier bar, it weighs about 15lbs itself, but it can hold more weight. Just have to be aware of how much weight you're putting on it. If I want 50 lbs, I have to add 35 lbs of weight, not 50!! It also has brackets avail to buy (I got it at Mc Sports) so it rests in the brackets and can be used as a chin up bar, which is the advantage of it being able to hold more weight. Supposedly it can also be used as a body bar as well, but I'm either too short or too uncoordinated for that bc I've tried and it seems to long. But I like my clanky, screw on weights and the heavier bar. I know a lot of the people hear like the rubber coated weights, the clips, and the lighter bar. I think its all personal preference. Once you figure out what you like though, try to find it used, you can save some decent $$$.

Nan

Edit --- Mine also came w/ 100lbs of weight. 4 10's, 6 5's and the rest 2 1/2's. Was about $40 on sale. I bought it at the store, so no shipping

This is a good site. Fast, reasonable shipping. I got my Troy Lite System from them. Cathe & crew use it in several workouts.
The Troy has a bit shorter bar, which I find great for home use. It weighs 5 pounds. It can handle up to 80 pounds. I did get a few extra weights when I bought it so I could play around with it some.

This is also the bar I have (actually, two of them) and the place I bought it (them!). I also bought some extra weight plates (10#, 1.25#) at the time, to have more options.

I highly recommend getting some kind of system with rubber-coated weights (like the Troy Lite). Metal plates can have problems with rust if they are subjected to damp weather.

I got my barbell set at fitness 1st in December (based on recommendations from this forum) and great. The prices are reasonable and the customer service is great. I got the standard set (35 lbs), but I need to get more plates now because it is not heavy enough. Also with Cathe's new series, she goes up to 62 lbs., so I may order enough plates for the new workouts.

BTW - I never thought I would be ready to move up in weight so quickly :)
