How to measure mileage on an elliptical

I got my new elliptical and am loving it. But am curious as to how to compare my workouts on it and my treadmill. The elliptical measures Revolutions per Minute and my total Revolutions for each workout session. Is there an easy (I hope) way to convert that to Miles per Hour or total mileage?

I am loving this new piece of equipment, but am really clueless about it. I used Cardio Coach vol. 5 this morning on it. It is now officially christened with sweat!;)

Thanks for any information you can offer for my newest toy.:)

Hi Sandra...I have a Nordic Track Elliptical and when I called them about this, I was told 1000 RPM's equals 1 mile. I like iClimbs as they use different resistance levels during the workout instead of mileage. I find for me that just works better...:)

Carole,

Thank you so much for that information!:) That is very helpful. I got a Nordic Track too, the 990. As far as workouts, Cardio Coach goes by resistance levels too. I can also use the incline. It was just making me a little nuts wondering how it compared to the distances and speeds I was used to using with my treadmill. I knew I was working as hard as I could, but still couldn't help wondering how it compared. Nice to know I was in my range on both pieces of equipment.

I read somewhere you can even go backwards on an elliptical. Is this a good idea? Have you? I don't want to do anything that would be bad for it.

Again, thank you for your kind reply.:)

This is what I do. I know for sure what is my mile time at a certain heart rate. So when I'm on the elliptical I just check my heart rate and know that if it's say for example 160 then it's probably 8 min/mile and just go from there. Of course it is a rough guess but this is what I do and it seems to work for me.

My elliptical has resistance and incline. It can be more of a "flat" course or go up to be more like a stairmaster. When I do iClimb, I always know what resistance to set it on (I love that they tell you) but I never know what incline to put it on for maximum calorie burn and energy expenditure. Is it better to be flatter or more vertical? Anyone have any ideas?

Lorie, my understanding is that the incline does not affect calorie burn, in other words, raising the incline does not increase the number of calories burned. Adjusting the incline places the emphasis on different muscles; the highest setting hits the glutes; midrange settings work glutes, quads, and hams; and the lowest places the emphasis on your calf muscles. HTH:)

How to measure mileage on a PRECOR elliptical??

GREAT question, and one that I think about every time I jump off of my Precor!

My Precor elliptical doesn't measure RPMs or mileage, it measures "strides". So, for example, if I do CC Vol. 5 or 6 or PressPlay (any CC that runs around an hour), I'll generally do between 8000 and 8500 strides.

Anybody have any idea how to convert that??

RE: How to measure mileage on a PRECOR elliptical??

Sandra...I think it is good sometimes to go backwards on the Elliptical. I have done it a few times just for a few minutes as it make me feel like a spaz...:)...Also you can go by your heart rate like Mari said, to see how hard you are working. That is if you keep track of that. I know in the upper resistances when I am pushing, I can get my heart rate up about as high as when I am running hard.

Kathy S...I know there are some Precor owners out there, maybe they will see this to help you convert!

Kathy, I have a Precor, too! I found out how to convert strides to miles and/or kilometers -- click the link and scroll down to FAQ # 30 :) http://www.precor.com/cons/en/suppo...cText=how+many+strides+per+mile+on+elliptical

Thank you so much, all of you, for your thoughtful replies. It is so nice to have a question and have such knowledgeable exercisers take the time to share their knowledge.:) I truely appreciate it.
