How much weight gain typical in first trimester?

I am not pregnant yet but trying! My doctor told me once I become pregnant that I should eat 200-300 calories above what it takes me to maintain. Not sure what that number is yet but I will be experimenting.

Does anyone know what the typical weight gain should be in the first tri-mester?

Thanks

Rachel

Hi and good luck. I believe the expected gain the first trimester is 5 pounds but varies among people. Many women with morning sickness lose weight the first trimester, others gain more during their trimester then level out. I gained about 2 pounds the first trimester and ate alot. Buy what to expect when your expecting for detailed info.(You can usually find it used at thrift stores)

Hi Rachel--I really think this varies as well. I know that doctors recommend very little weight gain in the first trimester, but I don't know if this is typical among women.

I always gain alot in the first trimester because I am sick and hungry (I know the 2 usually don't go together:p )and I can only eat what I can eat. In other words, I can't force myself to eat healthy because I'll get realllly sick. For example, this baby, there was a week where I was only able to eat bbq chips and cheese and then doritos and cheese--not low calorie! So at 12 1/2 weeks, I've gained 12 lbs, but that is normal for me. Now I'm not so sick and am able to eat a more balanced diet, so I hope to slow the gain down.

Hopefully, you'll be more like Shopaholic and most other ladies on this forum who gain at slower rates!

Maggie
