How much protein do we really need?

I hear so many different things on this. Some say 1g of protein per pound of body weight, some say 1g per kg of body weight...????
 
I think 12-20 percent of your daily intake is a reasonable amount to aim for. IMO, many people are too hung up on protein. I've heard the 1 g per kg more often (and recall readiing something about Arnold S. suggesting that amount).
