How long did you wait to work out?

After you had a baby, how long did you wait to work out and did you take it really easy at first? I'm not talking about walking as I am doing that already. I am talking about Cathe or other aerobics/weight training vids. I will be 4 weeks post on saturday. I have my follow up o/b appointment on wednesday but I'm getting super impatient here! HELP! x(

I waited almost 6 weeks too. I was just so tired, it was nice to just rest and not hurry back into it.

Because I had so much weight to lose last time, I started at about 2 weeks post partum with very light workouts--very low weights and stepping without my step. Since I felt pretty good and my bleeding did not increase, I picked things up gradually from there. I know they say wait 6 weeks, but I've never been able to. Listen to your body and go from there.

Maggie:)

You and me both Maggie. Too anxious to get back at it. 14 days for me and I think 11 the time before. I started back with lighter strength workouts and went from there. I still remember how great it felt to walk back in my workout room at get back at it!!

BUT...do what feels right for you. No two people are alike in this area. You may have had a more difficult birth or recovery and need a longer rest. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY and enjoy that baby!!

Thanks ladies.

I actually had what one would consider easy labor and delivery and I only bled heavily for about 1 1/2 weeks! I am down to a panty liner for spotting now for the past week and I feel great! I mean, sure, I get tired...what mom doesn't right? But aside from that I feel perfectly normal! I am one day shy of 4 weeks today...I think I am gonna do Basic Step or a light weight work out today, see how I feel and then go from there until my doc appointment next week.

THANKS!:)

Wendy if you are spotting you should be very careful and cautious. Personally I wouldn't do a thing till I had at least 2 weeks with no bleeding. I think I've said this here before, but at 6 weeks post partum (after c/s) I went for a light job .25 mile at the most and came back home to find out I was pouring out red blood again, then had to wait another 2 weeks to exercise. I would not even personally do aerobics if you are spotting, and with the weight training do things sitting down. Seeing as you want to do this today LOL I'm probably to late, but just be careful.

OOPS! Yup, too late! lol

Well, I did Basic Step, Stability Ball Abs Add on, Stretch Max # 2.

It felt GREAT! Basic Step is like walking (which I've done since Joey was born) once you've done Cathe's other work outs so I am not really worried about it affecting me negatively...I finished the work out about 30 minutes ago and all is well so far. :) I will not push it any harder until I see the doc though.

Glad you feel refreshed, btw was the abs from the new Hardcore ab workout? Anyway, love the new pics! :)

Heck no, the abs were NOT from Hardcore! LOL I'd be dead right now if they were!:p Plus the fact that I don't have that DVD (YET!) so it would be kinda hard for me to do the work outs! lol

The ab work out was from the basic step dvd...:)

TY about the pics!

Wendy,

I just had to tell you... you look FABULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Better than I do at almonst 11 months pp... now darn it I have to excuse. x( :)

You are better than I. I started within 2-3 weeks postpartum following each delivery. BUT, I felt comfortable since I am a Women's Health NP. :) Of course, if there had been complications I would have had to hang my head in shame.

You take care!

Goodness, Wendy, don't be so hard on yourself about your stomach!! That was going to happen whether you crunched yourself into oblivion every day of your pregnancy! Those muscles all got stretched as your belly grew, and now just need some time to unstretch. They were stretched out slowly over the nine months, and will need some time to slowly retract. From my last pregnancy, I recall reading that it takes the uterus quite a long time (weeks, if not a couple of months) to even go back to it's original size.

I'm so glad you've started exercising again. It's heartening to see proof that exercising throughout pregnancy really does help you recover quicker. I hope I can do the same thing, a few months from now!

All the best,
Sandra

Oh Wendy, I agree with Sandra. Don't be so hard on yourself. Your body was responsibly for housing another human being!!!!! Those muscles will strengthen... it just takes some time. I think the best ab/core workouts I've come across have been the Yoga Booty Ballet. It is probably because it is just a different way to work the muscle. I really like the squishy ball. Oh, and my pelvic floor is soooooo strong. Anyway Wendy, you look AWESOME period!!

The uterus is a pelvic organ and no longer can be palpated in the abdomen by 2 weeks postpartum. It never regains is never before pregnant size and shape, but usually returns to a nonpregnant size by 6 weeks postpartum. So Sandra is right, the first couple of weeks the uterus is there in the abodmen and pushing on stuff.

Oh, I gotta run... there is a proud almost 11 month old pulling at my shorts... he is proud he can crawl. And no the cat jumped into the computer desk cubby hole. :)

Hi Wendy,
I, too, agree with Autumn and Sandra you are being very hard on yourself! You look great.

I had to have a c-section and started working out during my 5th wk post-partum. I was walking with baby in stroller around 4 weeks. It took a few weeks to get my stamina back and stuck to Cathe's basic step/body fusion and high step circuit (and something else, I can't remember exactly what I did). The abs sections on those dvd's w/ the stability ball really helped me to get my abs back and ready for the more intense ab routines on her advanced workouts.

I reached my goal weight the day after my daughter turned 9 months old (just last month). I took my time and didn't put any real pressure on myself except for a few weeks when I did weight watchers (just counting points) to get myself off an annoying plateau. At this point, my legs and abs are stronger than before I got pregnant. I owe this to her Hardcore and Intensity Series, as well as Rhythmic Step and Power Hour. I'm a group fitness instructor so that motivated me but I did start back teaching when I still had about 9lbs to lose. I'd like to lose another 5lbs but that was my thinking before I got pregnant!

Sandra, Autumn & Diana,

Thanks ladies! You are all very sweet! :) I'm not being as hard on myself as it may have sounded in my post. I expected flabby abs but I guess just not to this extent! lol I know I'll get back to where I was...I just have to learn to be patient, right? ;)
