How about a Tricept Challenge?

I am thinking (as it is summer) how great its been to get those tricpets in shape... it really really shows...

I would be happy for any new tricept exercises...

Something daily with the idea of trimming the back of the arm rather than making them show...

Anyone want to make a plan ?

Tricep Tightening

For me, triceps are one of those hard to develop muscles because they're so small. I'm thinking one of the better ways to tighten them up as opposed to trying to make them pop out might be dips. I hate dips, so glad Cathe didn't include them on PH, but I think that's the kind of thing you're looking for. Maybe someone else has a more original idea to share about tricep tightening.

RE: Tricep Tightening

i used to hate dips too!
...but i got so i could do them well enough not to be terrified of them.
now i hate doing pushups with my elbows close to my chest for tricepts .... but i am going to get good enough at those also..

I agree!

I think dips are the best exercise for triceps, especially with a loaded barbell on your lap. Soooo, Cinza, how many are we doing??? Ha! Ill be afraid to check back! You in Ruth?

RE: I agree!

Ruth might not be able to do the dips... she has elbow problems... but maybe she will. ....

i want to get real dippy... ... but I dont know if a added barbell is good for me ...
What do you think?
i want my arms to look long and shapely.. ..... My arms are shorter and thicker than i like as it is.. i have a bulge for a tricept where i really want to make it trim and sleek.....(I make muscle pretty easy).....
currently i do 60 or dips so two times a week .... I also do at least 6 different tricept excercises with dumbells ranging from 12- 15lb in each hand two times a times a week (to exhaustion) ... and i do 8 different classes that have pushups where i can keep my elbows in for activating the tricepts.
I am thinking of adding another day of dips ... what do you think the smart thing would be for added weight and trimming the muscle?
....
After reviewing all the tricept work i do already, perhaps i should just sit back and relax while you all are dipping heavey barbells? :)

RE: Dip Form

Can someone tell me the correct form for dips? Should my heels be close to my bottom or further away? I notice that I don't seem to have as much range of movement as cathe. Thanks

RE: Dip Form

I've heard that it's supposed to be an intensity thing. Some people say the further you put your heels out in front of you, the more advanced it becomes because there's more leverage. The closer to the step (or weight bench) you place you heels, the less advanced. I kind of feel like it's what your legs and knees are comfortable with.

The only thing about dip form I'd say to make sure you're doing is to have your elbows pointing as straight back as you can and your hands at a position just outside your hips, unless you have especially narrow hips, then a little wider. It's hard for me to point my elbows straight back, but I know it's supposed to be the most effective way to do it. Happy dipping!

RE: Dip Form

Personally, my favorite rendition of a tricep dip was taught to me by my ex-husband, the alcoholic minister who also was a body builder. He showed me chair dips: You set up two kitchen chairs facing each other, and put your feet up on one, and use the other chair for your hands like Cathe uses a step. With these puppies you don't need a barbell in your lap!

I also like to use my Xertube and door attachment to do tricep pressdowns.

Dips totally bore me.........have you tried scull-crushers? I love them. You can really feel the burn and you make sure you can lift that weight back up because you will bash yourself in the head if you don't! I used to be afraid of them just because of the name, but not anymore. Other things would be extensions with a cable machine and rope or bar. Believe it or not, you hit different tricep muscles using either a rope or the bar. Good luck!!

P.S. If you are doing 25 lbs. for your tri's - you kick *ss!!

RE: I agree!

Hey Debbie, how ya doin? You know I can't resist anything you & the evil lady cook up!
Any tricep move at all has the potential to hurt my elbows, but lately they've been feeling pretty good, so...
My favourite tricep exercise is the prone position up & across...do you know what I mean? I have no idea what it's called.
So what's the challenge?
R. :)

Hi Ruth!

I'm doing just fine. A little frazzled trying to get these routines down, but I am getting excited about it all! Thanks for asking.

Are you talking about a push-up where you push up and then cross your hands over each other and go down and back up??? Hmmm~Does that make ANY sense at all? Also, if your elbow is just starting to feel good, I am wondering if you should push it with something intense such as dips?? We want you all better! Let me know what you think. How are YOU?

Hey Cinza!

I think you've done enough tricep work for you, Ruth and me combined!! I agree that lighter weight with more reps would probably be the way to go for you if you just want definition and not bigger tris. I don't think a weighted barbell is necessary. They are plenty challenging without. So, being you are the ARMY SERGEANT around here, what's the challenge????

RE: Hi Ruth!

Hi Debbie,
After thinking about it for - oh, 3 seconds! I decided you are right. I hate dips anyway, always have.
Do you know, I think the reason my elbows are getting better is because I stopped blow drying my hair. Isn't that wild?
I also decided I caused a shoulder into lower neck injury by leaning on one elbow for too long while reading in bed. As soon as I realized it was hurting me, & stopped doing it, that injury started to heal. (Also helped healing along by doing stretches.)
My point being, I don't think I've ever injured myself working out, only by doing repetitive things that strain my body. In other words, real life.
Only me! ;-)
When is your first solo class?
Ruth :)

Skull Crusher

You know, a 'nut cracker'. You lie down on your back and do tricep extensions while trying not to hit your forehead. Might be a good idea to have a pad on the bar during these, if you can get your hands close enough together that is.
