How about a gift for a man age 80+

Each year I am stumped with a great idea for my Dad and my FIL. They both have birthdays near Christmas, so it is twice the effort.

For my Dad we do a subscription to the local news paper every year. For FIL we do a subscription to El Nuevo Herald, Sunday edition. This is the Miami paper in Spanish. It gets deliverd fitst class to his home in NY. He loves it.

I need one more gift for each of them .

Clothes are out. They won't wear anything new.

How about a gift card to Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks or a local coffee place? Gift card to the movies? Or is there a special supermarket they go to? Or one of those once a month gift fruit boxes? Can you tell I've had a lot of experience with this!!!!!

Judy, we're in the same spot with my MIL and FIL, both of whom are 80 and don't need anything. My FIL appreciates "treats", so we always get him a bottle of Veuve Clicquot and make up a basket of his favorite snack foods and candies to go with it. He and my MIL usually drink the Champagne on New Years Eve.

ETA that I used to send ethnic food baskets to my uncle (he's gone now :-( ), filled with imported Italian goodies that you can only find around here during the holidays, and he loved that. Maybe your FIL would enjoy some Cuban delicacies.

Do a Google search for Times magazine....I remember seeing something about them doing a really cool gift idea with old covers. You send them your birthdate and they send you the Times cover issued on that date! Something like that, I will look and see. That might be a really cool "nostaligic" gift idea!

You could also buy them a "star" , that is always a really neat gift, although, it depends on the personalities of the receiver. My mother in law would secretly love it, but then deem it a "waste" of money. She's Jewish after all! :7 Love her to death.:7

What about a packaged set of old movies that might like? Warner Brothers has alot of old time movies, try that?:)

This is a great idea! My IL's love the the old movies they show on the Turner Classic Movie channel.

Maybe a Harry & David fruit of the month club. I received this once from a former boss, and each month's "gourmet" fruit was absolutely delicious.

Audio books if they like to read but have vision trouble.

How about a jigsaw puzzle?

My Grandfather LOVES Friendly's restaurant. It's hysterical. For his 80th birthday, my siblings and I got him 8 gift certificates to Friendly's for $10 each. He looooved it. It was really cute. Does your FIL have a favorite restaurant that you could do something like that with?

LOL! My grandparents ate there almost every single day!!!!!!!!!!!! And they were especially pleased with the free sundaes they got when they ordered a specific meal! Too funny!

I got my FIL a set of 8 "keychains" that can be attached to keys, glasses cases, remote controls, etc. If you misplace it, you press the master remote and the keychain beeps and lights up. I also got him a magnifying glass with light that's the size of a credit card. (If you hadn't guessed, FIL's eyes aren't that great!) I found these at Sharper Image.

Thank you for the ideas.

I think my Dad will appreciate fruit of the month from Harry and David. FIL doesn't like fruit and MIL gets mad if he eats too many sweets. I gave him a chocolate basket once and he did not like it.

May I can find a cuban gift basket web site.

How about the gift of time? Is there anything in their households that needs doing? Can you make out Christmas cards for them to send out? Perhaps pick up the grand children's Christmas gifts for them? I used to help my grandmother out around the holidays and she told me she appreciated the help and the time with me more than any material gift I could have given.

My parents like it when I get personalized stuff from Things remembered...pen sets engraved with a sentiment.

The best gift was a "journal" type book where they could tell me about their life. I am taking dictation on my dad's life right now. It is facinating.

I have also made miniature scrapbooks with my favorite memories. That was also really loved.

One year I baked my parents their favorites and gave it to them in a basket.

Judy,

I don't know if you have a lot of money to spend but I hit a MAJOR home run with my parents and DH's parents last year. I gave each of them an XM Receiver (29.99 at Walmart) and 3 month subscription for XM. They all LOVE it. It plays the old time radio and just about everything else. Each year I intend to send them a gift card for more subscription time. I have heard nothing but praise for the gift and it really didn't cost us very much...

HTH

We gave my DH's grandpa a pair of slippers a few years back, and he STILL talks about them. Apparently old guys love the slippers. Since you did the newspaper subscription (which I think is a really great idea--and I may steal that idea one day), I'd do a little gift basket around the newspaper/breakfast theme. Maybe put some slippers, some good coffee, a mug and a Donut place giftcard (or a gourmet pancake mix and gourmet syrup if they cook) in a basket along with the newspaper you are getting the subscription for. I'm a big basket person. Everyone loves a basket of goodies.

If they served during Korea ( I think that would be the right time frame, or late WW2) how about a nice compilation video or book on "their war". If they are Vets, my thanks to them. They always referred to Korea as the forgotten war.
