hotel gym rant

I have to travel 3 weeks (seperate weeks) per year for work. Usually the hotel gyms are either 24 hours, or something like 5 or 6 am to 10 or 11:00 PM and usually cost anywhere from free-$30 for a week. Well next week I'm staying at Treasure Island in Las Vegas and their hotel gym costs either $20 per day or $50 for 3 consecutive days, and its only open 7 AM-7PM! I have to work at a convention from 9-5, so I doubt I will have anytime to get in there at all. What crap!

Caren,

Can I suggest that if you own a laptop that has a dvd player in it, that you bring a home workout with you? KPC is perfect for staying in hotels - it doesn't require much space, no equipment, and the premixes can give you a different workout each day of the week. BootCamp is also really easily done when travelling, if you just take a pair of 8lb dumbells with you and find a chair for the leg presses and tricep dips. (yes, having only the 8lb dumbells compromises the amount of weight you do for the legs, for that's only a small part of the workout).

That is an odd thing that their gym is so unaccessible. You almost have to think that they want you out of the gym and in the casinos, hey?

BTW, my husband is going to a "convention" in Vegas at the end of January, and staying at Treasure Island. Are you the girlfriend he refuses to tell me about?

Good luck!
Sandra

I know, it's a complete PIA. I spend a week every year in Atlantic City for a convention. Last year we were at Bally's & the gym didn't open until 10 am! Boy if you want to hear someone complain......I mean, that is totally useless for someone travelling on business......

This year we stayed at the Borgada, a beautiful hotel & the place opened at 6 am, but it cost $10 per workout, which IMO is insane considering how much you have to pay for everything else. However they did provide free bottled water, which was nice, & had a pretty decent setup for a hotel gym.....they even had a full set of free weights & a smith machine, which really surprised me.

Unfortunately, I don't have a laptop. I have never really had a use for one. I asked if they had VCRs or DVD players in their room too, but they don't. If it were a different city I could go for a run in the morning, but I don't want to be running around the LV strip by myself, and besides it's too cold right now. I think I'm just going to make up a routine to do in my room. It's better than nothing.

Sandra - My husband is coming to stay with me Thurs-Sun, so I will only be needing your from Sat-Wed that week, if that's okay w/ you :)

I just wanted to suggest jump roping. This is what I do in the hotel room if I don't want to use their gym. Treasure Island rooms should be big enough for you to do this. We stayed at Caesar's Palace in Nov and I jumped rope, did walking lunges, push ups and core/abs.. Just a suggestion. Bands are also good, or if they have a heated pool to do laps in..

depending on the hotel..you could run up and down the staircases. i do this at the hospital i work at..26 flights is one HECK of a workout!}(

Hi-

I haven't been to Vegas in a couple of years and can't remember how far Treasure Island is from the Venetian, but if its not too far, The Venetian has a Canyon Ranch Spa/Gym there that is absolutely outstanding.. Yep, you would have to pay, but it would at least be worth the money!! Sometimes you pay for the gyms and they are pretty poor, w/ old , badly maintained equipment. ( I have big rage about that!!)

I travel alot for my job and can feel your pain about the gyms that aren't open 24 hours/day. Its hard enough to stay fit when on the road and if you can't even workout when you want to, its such a bummer!!

Good Luck, Lynn M.

Hi Caren! Here is a workout plan that Cathe posted sometime ago. It says for two weeks but actually is only one. I think maybe she posted it to a gal wanting a two-week plan and this is what Cathe suggested. I used it while we were on vacation and it did the job! Have a great time! (After you get your work done during the day!) Don't forget to go see the fountains at The Bellagio! (Also, maybe you could sub the stairs for the 25 minute run/walks.)

25 minutes a morning is all you need to maintain enough so that when you come back you will not feel out of the loop. Bring one set of moderate pound dumbbells (5 or 8 pounds)Here is a sample two week vacation workout:

Monday/Wednesday/Friday

a) Warm Up:
5 minute brisk walk

b) Legs:
Leg Blast:
30 seconds non-weighted squats
30 seconds plyo jacks
30 seconds squats/ with dumbbells in hands
30 seconds front kicks (no dumbells)
30 seconds side kicks (no dumbbells)

Forward lunges (with dumbbells)....3 sets 15 reps (Rt leg 15 / Left leg 15 then do the next set).

Back lunges (with dumbbells).....Same reps/sets as forward lunges.

c) Torso/Arms
Chest: 3 sets of 10 push ups...On last rep of last set hold push up 1/2 way down for 20 seconds.

Back: One arm dumbbell rows (put both weights in one hand) do 3 sets of 15 reps per arm.

Biceps: Concentration curls (put both weights in one arm)do 3 sets of 15 reps.

Triceps: ALTERNATE one set of dips (15 reps) with one set of double arm kickbacks (do as many as you can with that weight and good form). Do three alternating sets.

Shoulders: Seated bent arm side lateral raises (10 reps) right into rear delt flys (as many as you can with that weight and good form). Do three alternating sets.

Abs: traditional crunches for 3 minutes and then flip over and hold a one minute plank

Stretch

Tues/Thursday/Saturday

A 25 minute walk/run (this includes 5 minute brisk walk warm up and three minute stretch)

Bon Voyage

Thanks, you guys are great and helpful as always. I don't think Treasure Island is very far from the Venetian. Hopefully I will get to check that out.

Debbie - thanks! I think I will take some 8lbs dumbells and try that. I am also going to see if I can fit my Firm Sculpting stick in my suitcase. It's light but better than nothing!

Thanks again everyone!
