home spinning reccomendations/opinions dvd's

Cathlete
I am interested in adding spinning to my routine. I have researched and found a good bike, but can't seem to find DVD's that are
a] tough
b] motivating with great music
c] have style [fun to watch].

Does anyone know of spin videos that have all these qualities? I had really hoped Cathe would put out a series, but I suppose she has her hands full already. I prefer not going to the gym if I don't have to. I think a home workout can be as effective as the gym, and a lot more convenient. Thanks!

Hi there! I have a few spinervals- lots of people like them, but they just don't do it for me.They have a website, just do a google search for it.

I like to just blast some music and ride on my own, because I used to teach spinning alot, and just find that fun. Although I haven't done it in awhile! I'll have to dust off the old bike the next rainy day :)

Good luck!

Thanks for resonding. I have heard of the spinnervals, but most responders don't care for them. I have never taken spin classes so working on my own won't due until I know the basics extremely well. I'm guessing SOMEONE has made worth while videos....... CATHE' are you listening??? :) Really, anyone?? Is there a great dvd?

I actually really like the spinervals series. I had never taken a spin class, nor cycled before, but the spinervals DVDs for me are a great workout. I am able to get my heartrate up to the same level that I achieve when doing an IMAX or other comparable workout. The first couple times I tried spinervals I wasn't sure if they were for me, but now that my legs are getting stronger and stronger from doing them, it's easier and easier to get my heartrate up high and burn major calories.

Maybe I should give them a try. My biggest fear is I put out the big $$$$ for the bike and can't find a workout I am happy with. Then i'm stuck with the bike as a clothers hanger :-(

Are you dead set on doing the spinning with DVD's? I bought a few DVD's when I first got my bike - Mindy's Super Cycle and CIA All Terrain. I enjoyed them and would recommend them, but I found myself using my icycles (from itrain.com) and cardio coaches (cardiocoach.com) much more. In case you aren't familiar with these, they are audio workouts with an MP3 player or ipod. I have since traded my DVD's and I use these exclusively on the bike. I have taken spinning in the gym and these come pretty close.

Hey, thanks for the feedback. I have not considered these audio workouts. I don't have a problem using an audio. I just want dirrection and push to work harder. I'm sure you know how it's easy sometimes to go off in a daydream or plan the grocery list when your supposed to be working hard. I guess I could buy a dvd to help learn the ropes of spinning, then progress to the audio.

I love spinervals! But you said with great music and that they do not have. The new ones have a "music off" option so you can play your own. They are very tough! Coach Troy and Cathe are about the only dvd's I use.:)

Hi, I have tried the Spinervals, but never really enjoyed them. I bought Mindy Mylrea's Super Cycle Challenge which I liked more, but still could only motivate myself to spin once every other week or so...then I decided to use my Cardio Coach's on my bike, and now I spin at least twice a week! Coach Sean's dreamy voice always motivates me to push harder, and spinning has really increased my leg strength and endurance.

spinervals!!!!!!!!!!! gotta love them! coach troy is SOOOOOOOO deliciously EVIL! you get a GREAT cardio workout! (and for me the benefit of on the bike training for all my important rides throughout the year!)

i love cathe workouts.... but somehow i just do not see her as a spin instructor.... but then.... i'm spoiled with spinervals!

(and i really LOVE the ones where he incorporates weights... the irongirl full body is my absolute favorite of those!)

Spinervals (which I absolutely love) are designed with the serious cyclist in mind. They are tough, no-nonsense workouts that will help increase your stamina, strength and speed on the bike. As I'm a cyclist from way back, and actually used Spinervals to get me through a couple 100 mile bike rides, I like them very much. However, I can see why people don't like them. And they are TOUGH! I love them for a shorter high intensity interval workouts.

I am also a huge fan of the iTrains (I did iClimb 17 on my bike today - I find them all easy to adapt to a bike - so you don't have to limit yourself to the iCycles once you get the hang of them) and Cardio Coach Press Play (Choose Living) is an absolute must if you want to come off that spin bike not only thorough drenched, but ready to take on the world. I love the rest of the Cardio Coaches, too, but that one is my absolute favorite.

I know a lot of clubs have podcasts from their spinning classes, too, so check around - you might be able to find some of those on line. I wish I had a podcast of the one class I attended - she about killed me! But it was incredible.

Another Spinervals fan here. As mentioned above, the music is nothing to rave about but I hardly notice because I am focused on Coach Troy (he IS evil in a good way!}( ) and what he is saying. These are amazing workouts and I would not get nearly as much out of my spin bike without them. I must admit that I love really tough workouts and these (the competition series) are IT!!

I love Spinervals more than words can say! But, they are not at ALL like Cathe in any way, shape, or form, so if you like the pretty set, choreographed outfits and workout, smiley happy faces, etc., you will be in for a shock. :) Spinervals are much more hard core, athletic, in your face, and brutally tough, if you do them as designed. They are not for the weak of heart. They will also get you in the best shape of your life.

I've heard good things about Mindy Mylrea's spinning DVD's, and knowing her personality, I'd think she'd be much more Cathe-like than Spinervals, if that's what you are looking for, but I don't have any so can't directly comment. I have found perfection in Spinervals. :)

Which Spinervals workouts do you use.....which are SUPER tough????I have a couple spin dvd's, and am so disapointed in them..they are not at all tough....when I do a spinning workout, I need to practicly fall down when I get off the bike and be completlely drenched! Thanks for the suggestions...also like longer workouts...

each spinerval is rated.... 6.5 being the lowest for one of the fitness ones (ride strong) and 10 being the most difficult for hardcore 100, and a couple of the other compilations.

there are also a few aerobase ones that are 7.5... less intense... for building base "miles" or for recovery days.

most all the others are in the 9.something range...

if you check out the spinervals site they give you an idea of what the video is targeting (i.e. the time trial ones will be more longer sets with sustained efforts as you would use in a time trial; the hill climbing or "bending crank arms" ones are more hard gear work to build strength)

you may like the high cadence ones better... so in the fitness category "enter the red zone" comes to mind, in the competition "zoot challenge" or "ride and stride" off the top of my head....

you may want to stay away from "recharge", the aero base builders, "recovery and technique" cuz you won't be falling off the bike after you do those...

long ones: "tough love" 3 hours! that is one great workout! and yes... you feel you accomplished something when you are done!

there are also two compilations that are rated 10 "have mercy" and "have mercy, the sequel" that are supposed to be the hardest sets from previous workouts... i have them, but just got them and haven't done them yet!

and the longest spinerval: "hardcore 100" is 5 hours... again... i have it, but haven't done it (just got it recently and don't plan to have a saturday to do it til next fall unless we get some freaky socal weather!)

checkout spinervals.com and if you have any questions, feel free to ask... if i've done it i'll give my opinion or at the least i can post what the sets consist of for you (i have all the spinervals now, but haven't done all of them yet cuz i just completed my collection and i'm still working my way through them!)

I often spin several days in a row. I try to alternate interval spins with more steady state. So a Cardio Coach one day and an iCycle the next would be a good example. Or if you're using Spinervals - Hillacious followed by Spinervals Virtual Reality Autumn Ride. But, like anything, cross training is essential to keep the other muscles strong as well to avoid over use injuries.

Edited to add - I have not found an "easy" Spinervals. Even the fitness ones rated at 7.5 and that have the two minute rest between sets can be vicious if you give them your all. I have Sweating Buckets and I literally do sweat buckets and that is one of the "easier" workouts.
