High Impact, Blasts and Ab Work

Hi everyone :)
I just found out that we're expecting our first baby! I'm 5 weeks along, and there is so much conflicting information out on the net about exercise during pregnancy. And of course everyone has their own opinion as well! My mom for example, was horrified that I have been doing workout videos as I normally would. I've been choosing lower impact workouts or modifying others, and skipping the blasts as not to get my heart rate too high. Is this the right thing to do? Or can I jump and blast away? I've also not done ab work in a week as it just feels weird...am I imagining things???

Congrats on the Pregnancy!!! I would ask you ob specifics you personally what you can and cant do during pregnancy but i was told whatever you were doing before is ok. Do not go anarobic and you should be able to talk through whatever activity you have been doing with out feeling winded or short of breath. No intervals or blasts. I did ab work until my thrid trimest basically on my back with out issue. THey say to keep the heart rate <140 bpm.

Goodluck

Hi there,
I'm 5 weeks as well, and have been going about my normal routine.

Like you, I've dialed back the intensity. I'm already finding that I get winded easily and am quite tired. So I've been doing Cathe's beginning/intermediate workouts, and slower TaeBo.

I have every intention of doing as much as I can throughout my pregnancy. And I've been told that part of the reason I have not been sick or overly tired is because I've continued with my workouts.
Not sure how true that is...but I know I do feel better and have more energy after working out.

Congratulations!

I'm 21 weeks. I had every intention of working out through my whole pregnancy, but then I was too sick, tired and depressed during my first trimester. I just started getting back into exercise about 3 weeks ago. My doctor said working out is just fine, even jogging. You don't want to go anaerobic like another poster said, but the heart rate below 140 is outdated. I found a really good book on the subject called "Excercising through your pregnancy" by Clapp. He did studies on women who worked out during pregnancy and he gives the results in his book and they all point towards exercising being beneficial and not harmful during pregnancy. He also tells you what happens physiologically during pregnancy and during exercise. I found it quite interesting, you might want to check it out.

Good luck!

Melimcn, I have every intention of doing as much as I can as long as I can too. I haven't been sick at all yet, and as far as being tired, I find myself just a bit tired at the end of the workday where before I'd be pretty energetic. But our bodies are working hard right now, so that's ok :)

Thanks for the book recommendation...sounds really interesting. I'm off to amazon to check it out.

I just wanted to let you know, one thing about that book is that it only talks about cardio there wasn't anything in it about ab work or resistance training, but it's still good.
