Hi ladies :) I am only 6 weeks pregnant but soooo excited after trying for what seems like forever! I had my 1st ob visit yesterday and my dr told me to take it really easy for the next few weeks as they are the most crucial for early development. I told her what exercise I typically do (mostly Cathe's muscle endurance and boot camp...my all time fav!!) and she told me to NOT do any extreme cardio at all including NO more jumping or bouncing around so no more jumping jacks etc. (basically all the cardio moves in boot camp) and NO step, NO tae-bo, and NO full crunches :( sooo I said what can I do? She said anything other than that but also NO heavy lifting..nothing over 10lb. YIKES what can I do ladies? I haven't even had any energy to work out in the past week but I want to get back into it for mine and my baby's health but I would really appreciate any suggestions from you ladies...please! Thank you in advance and sorry this post is so long!

Hi Heather and welcome! And congrat's on the pregnancy!

Is this a high-risk pregnancy? It seems like your doctor is making a lot of strong reccomendations about your exercise routine so early in your pregnancy and I am wondering if she is concerned about miscarriaging? Usually you can continue your normal exercise routine far into your pregnancy, so that is why I am wondering if this is high risk???

As for low-key workouts, walking is always a good one if you live in an area that is not getting too cold. And, you can always change to low weight, high repetition, to keep your muscle tone. There are definately things you can do between doing Cathe and doing nothing. It is just hard because you are used to the intensity of a good Cathe workout, so it will be a big change for you.

Good luck to you and hope to see you around here more!

Wow, it does seem like your OB is being pretty strict. Do you have medical issues that need you to take it easy? I was doing pretty much my normal routine (when I didn't feel nauseated) until my second trimester. Then I started modifying as I get big fast. Now in my last trimester I've started more with the water aerobics, prenatal videos and prenatal yoga. I would think the doctor would be OK with that sort of stuff. Don't worry too much, this is my third and I've always been able to get back into my normal exercise routines after the baby is born! Best thing is for you to take care of yourself and your baby! ;-)

Good luck!!!

That seems very strict. I'm not telling you to ignore what your doctor says, but I'm wondering if you can get a second opinion. My doctor said everything I did before was fine to keep doing including step aerobics. I don't jog, but she said that was fine too. A really good book that tells you why exercising during pregnancy is a good thing is "Exercising Through Your Pregnancy" by Clapp. It talks about the benefits of cardiovascular exercise.

Good Luck,
Amy
