Hi Wendy,

Your post about your dog Clyde really hit home with me. I couldn't get myself to respond because it was happening to our dog too and I was just so sad. On Monday, I brought my 13 year old Sheltie **Bailey** in for a biopsy because the lymph nodes on her neck felt enlarged. Unfortunately the vet just called today and informed me she has cancer. He said they could do chemo and steroids to keep her comfortable but it doesn't change the inevitable. I'm lucky for the fact that I've had her for 13 years and she's pretty much reached the life expectancy for her breed. Even still, it is so hard to make that decision to put her to sleep and actually carry it out.

I really pray that your Clyde is OK and that it is nothing serious. He is just a baby and needs the chance to live out a long and happy life. Give him a hug for me.

That is so sad. I feel for you. I had to put a dog down once when I lived at home. It was a german short haired pointer who we had since I was a little kid. He was about 14 years old when he got sick (tho not from cancer) so he had a good long life but that doesn't make it an easy thing to do. In his case though, he was quite obviously miserable and in pain so I just kept thinking to myself that this needs to happen for his sake. He will be happier. So it was done, and I cried for a few days but I knew in my heart I had done right by him. Your Bailey has lived a good long life too. When the time comes, please try to remember that. Also remember, that if he is really sick and hurting, there is no quality of life so he will be much better off...

Thank you Wendy for your kind words. We had a family meeting and decided to put her down tomorrow. My kids are really having a hard time but understand that this is the most humane thing to do. It's hard because she really isn't in pain yet and acts normal but I just don't want her to have to suffer at all. We are going to take pictures and spend some quality time with her tonight. As painful as it is, we consider ourselves lucky to have spent the last 13 years with her. She's been a joy :)
