Hey Sooooooooooooosan...the Eccentric Chinup

RE: Briee!

Hey everybody! I would like to join in on the check-in.

Last year I could do 4, almost 5 chin-ups. I can't do any pull-ups...yes, I think that these are much harder. I am going to the gym today and I will how many I can get out. I'll even try the pull-up version, too.

I do remember that when I started doing them, I got stronger very fast. I was able to do another one in less time than I thought I would. Also, I find that bending my knees and crossing my legs didn't work for me. I couldn't do them that way at all. Straight legged is easier for me.

I have seen some of the instructors do chin-ups/pullups by bringing up bent knees to their chest. They find it easier to help them lift themselves up. I don't!

The reason I stopped doing them was that when I did do chin-ups my tennis elbow really flared up. It was part of what prevented me from doing more. Does anybody else have this problem?

RE: Briee!

My Power Tower has one bar, but it is designed to do chinups and pull ups. It has a middle bar for chinups and extension out to the side to do wide grip pullups. So I guess I have no excuse to try both.

RE: Briee!

But Catherine in regards to your power tower...I do believe that the solid gold bar is the best...I'm sure if I had one I could do at least 50 chinups. I believe it has something to do with the energy flow creating an updraft in the ascending movement thereby enabling one to lift ones weight with greater momentum. This is also aided during full moons when you can do at least 17% more due to the gravitational pull accompanying such an event.

So I think I'll wait until the next Wednesday of the first full moon to join you all in checking in as this will be to my great advantage - oh...and I'm going right down to paint my bar gold - mental thing you know!!

Briee (Wednesday sounds good to me guys) It's 8:17 am and I'm still trying to get myself down to my workout room. I've been up since 5:00 and haven't started yet!x(

RE: Briee!

Forgot to add....Namita. GREAT you'll be joining us!! Make sure you do LOTS of stretching (P90X style) prior to doing your pullups. I like Cathe's wrist extentions to help with the forearm pain that I experience in the beginning of trying pullups. (you know that exercise where she holds the 12# weights in her hands and rests her arms on her upperlegs and rolls her wrists up and down). Be careful. I was actually in the hospital when I did my first P90X chest and back (I like to push myself }( ). I had a severe case of tenosynovitis that left my right arm numb almost up to my shoulder. I found that I have to be very careful with the close grip chin ups - they are the only ones that bother this condition. At least for me. I was in a cast for 3 weeks - DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN!! (that may have been more depressing than helpful - sorry).

RE: Briee!

One more thing and I'm going downstairs to see what I can do. I printed that article out for my Tuesday night "workout" group - remember the one you posted Soosan about what happens to women. Stolen body parts - legs, arms, neck etc... They thought it was hysterical and SO TRUE!! Thanks again for posting it!!!!!

briee (trying to think of any other excuse not to go down to work out - I think I'm out of them:) )

Yay! Namita's in! I remember you from the Road Trip, Namita. I'm impressed you can do so many chin-ups! I wish I could keep my legs straight, but my bar isn't high enough. Bringing my knees up definitely helps me because it adds momentum (at least the way I do them;-)).

Briee, thanks for explaining the physics of why a solid gold bar works better. You are just all around brilliant, aren't you? I forgot about the full moon part. I guess that answers my question about how many rest days to put in between - one month sounds just about right!:p

You all are so motivating!

Sooooooooooooosan...LOL. One month rest breaks...now don't go suggesting this...I just may go for it with the mood I'm in lately.

And bringing your knees up is just fine!! You should see the awful faces and body contortions I do for my last rep...just to get to the top. I could NEVER do these in a public gym.
