hey runners when you buy shoes, . . .

do you buy 1 or 1/2 a size up? I know sometimes it depends on the shoe but the marathon runners I know tell me I should always buy 1 size up because your feet swell. I've always gone 1/2 a size up and wondered if it would make a difference? I mean by the time I would know I would have had to run in them which would make them non returnable and out the money. thanks in advance.

I wear a 9-9.5 in street shoes (depends on the brand) and when I buy my running shoes I get a 10. I found out about buying them a bit bigger the hard way when marathon training. My toenails bruised up really bad and they hurt. Gross, I know. Good luck!

I don't necessarily go up a size in running shoes. What I usually do is try on pair after pair of running shoes (with my running socks on) until I find a pair that doesn't slip, rub or feel even slightly tight on any part of my foot. The tip of my toes doesn't touch the inside of the shoe. I also don't lace my shoes tight at all, they're pretty loosely laced which accommodates any swelling. Have fun shoe shopping :)

For me it completely depends on the brand. Sizes just run different.

I wear Mizunos to run in, and I go 2 full sizes up. I wear an 8 in normal shoes, and my Mizunos are a size 10.

I would definitely try the shoes on and determine from the fit what you need for the extra toe room.

Oh, and for the record, I wear Thorlo socks which are very thick. Without those, I might only go up 1 and a half sizes.

Holy moly ladies, . . . you all have way bigger feet than me. I can wear kids shoe size 6. It must be nice to wear a size 8 all the coolest clearance shoes are in the bigger sizes. I guess socks make all the difference in the world.

The average shoe size for women is between an 8 and a 9.

I find that the clearance shoes are definitely NOT the size 8s ad 9s. Most of what's left for clearance is either very small or larger like 11s.

I beg to differ. I can never find clearance shoes in my size! They usually start at size 8 and I'm a 6-6.5! You'd think that would be a common size that you could always find on the clearance rack. Maybe they're just always gone by the time I can get there! :(

I wear a size 11 running shoe for long runs. I can wear a 10.5 for shorter runs/thinner socks. My regular shoe size is a 10.

YES - I have big feet. :)

have you ever gone to get fitted for your running shoes? it is worth the time and you will get the shoe fit best for your type of foot. here in Atlanta we have Big Peach Running Co. and they perform fittings at no cost. they first have you stand on a device which shows how much (or little) of an arch you have, then they put you in a pair of "neutral" shoes and you run on a treadmill while they video record you. they can determine if you over-pronate, under-pronate or are more in the middle. I am mainly a cyclist, but I like to run. you get fitted for a bike, so why not your shoes, too??

Another great place to get help with finding the right shoes for your particular needs is FleetFeet.

I know we have them in Atlanta, and they are a chain, so they are also located in other places.

Running specific stores will also have a great return policy, letting you run in the shoes for a few weeks. In fact, Road Runner Sports (online retailer) has a 30 day return policy - run all you want in them during those 30 days.

Janie,

I have a wide foot so shoes fit me a little weird. That said, I usually wear a 7 or 7.5 in street shoes but wear and 8W in my preferred pair of running shoes. I also prefer to wear very thin socks when I run and I put a pair of arch support insoles in the shoes. Changing the socks or insoles around makes a big difference. Also, different brands use different lasts and sizes so while I might wear an 8W in my Brooks Adrenalines, if I had to try a different brand I would try on multiple sizes. If I can't get a wide, I have to go up to an 8.5 but that leaves the toebox feeling too roomy.

Good luck finding a pair that works for you!
Lisa
