Hello, Sooooooooooooosan (if that is your real name today) . . .
I'm not really sure what it is about my exercise history (and lack thereof in my formative years) that has propelled me toward my current level of fitness and performance. I think, however, in retrospect that I have constantly, unconsciously, worked toward simply the ability to work harder. And a lot of that is in response to the sheer embarrassment I felt in my younger years at how awkward, ungainly and weak I so obviously was.
I think, as you've pointed out, small incremental increases in effort have produced amazing, cumulative, long-term results. What used to make me gasp now feels manageable. That holds true every year, and I've also applied that to aqua. I also believe that aqua being an integral part of my schedule has enabled me to work out longer, harder with less risk to the joints and less risk of overheating.
I don't think I'll ever lose the desire to try harder, to make today's work-to-failure workout tomorrow's simple challenge workout. Don't really know where all that comes from, but I ain't arguing. I took my blood pressure and resting heart rate a few weeks ago, as I mentioned in another post, and my BP came back 118/67 and my RHR 45 beats per minute. Those, my friend, are awesome numbers. Thank God for exercise.
