help with relaxing

Hi everyone. I read the post from the other day about yoga DVDs. I'm trying to find something for my husband. He is going through some health issues that the Dr's are saying stress is the cause for most of his problems and they are telling him to relax. Easier said than done right. So before he has a heart attack, he has agreed to do a yoga or meditation tape before bed at night with me. (he doesn't sleep much) But he feels very intimidated because he isn't very flexible and has back and knee problems. He works out a lot but it is mostly weight training. I was hoping you all knew something very relaxing that maybe your DH would do(so he doesn't feel like it's a girly tape). Thanks for all your help.

You don't have to be flexible to do Yoga - in fact, inflexible people will probably benefit the most from it. It's a practice, and flexibility comes with time - in the mean time, all Yoga poses can be modified to suit any level. He doesn't need to be intimidated! :)

With that said, perhaps a DVD that isn't specifically Yoga would be a good place to start. AM/PM Stretch for Health is a good one (and my own DH has done it) - it's relaxing, good for all levels, and not "girly" (it's lead by a woman, but it's set in some very beautiful outdoor places). I think there may also be an AM/PM Yoga for Health DVD, or something along that line... Definitely start with something geared toward beginners - your DH is probably not ready for headstands and such! ;)

Good luck getting your DH to relax. I've been trying to get mine to relax for years... *sigh*

You know I read your post and thought about my DH and stress relievers which work for him. I have found that a very light touch to his back and neck and soles of his feet relaxes him very well. Is this an option for you? It might be worth a try. HTH

thanks for the tips. I actually saw that AM/PM yoga DVD but didn't know anything about it, maybe I'll go get it. I've also been giving him massages, his back and neck hold most of the stress. He also loves when I massage his temples, he can sometimes get stress headaches. thanks again. wish me luck trying to get him to relax, this is a huge task:-(

I've got the AM/PM Stretch DVD. It sounds along the same lines as the yoga one. It's a woman teacher and all filmed outdoors. It's nice and relaxing, nothing strenuous and you don't have to be flexible or know anything about yoga to do it. I got it on Amazon.

I just got Yoga for Stress Relief with Barbara Brenaugh(?) from amazon. It has an insomnia series, relaxing, digestion, neck and shoulder etc.--I just previewed it and was impressed with the choices and length of the practices. It is also pick your own level. Looks good.
