help Lee Iacocca & diabetes sufferers

There was a great interview on the Today show this a.m. with Lee Iacocca. His wife died of type 1 diabetes and he promised her he would do his best to find a cure in his lifetime. He funded some research and a Harvard doctor has managed to cure it in mice but there is no funding for research on humans. They need $11 million to begin the research and Lee has put up $1 million of his own.

Type 1 diabetes (aka, juvenile or insulin dependent) is the 5th leading cause of death in the U.S. and anyone who knows someone with diabetes, also knows the many complications from this horrible disease... not to mention that most diabetes 1 sufferers don't make it past 60 yrs old...

I hope I don't sound too preachy but this is a big problem in my family, my husbands family and also 2 of our friends have it. So spread the word if this is something that hits home with you.

Just wanted to let you know, I always raise money for the "walk for diabetes" each year. They are getting so close!

So many people know so little about diabetes. As a dental hygienist, I am constantly explaining how important the health of one's gums is to diabetes. If one's gums are unhealthy that bacteria can make it very difficult to control diabetes. Not to mention, with all the medications that people w/ diabetes are on they often have dry mouth with leads to more cavities, higher rates of gum disease, etc. So if you know someone with Diabetes tell them to make sure their dentist and hygienist knows - it is so important to their oral and overall health!

Just trying to help, Wendy:)

My husband has type2 diabetes. I never realized how important his oral hygiene needs to be. Thanks for the info. Are mouthwashes helpful? If so, is anyone better than others for diabetics? Thanks.

As a brittle, Type 1 diabetic, I'd like to say thanks for bringing it to the attention of the forum readers, CurlyQ. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy.

Hi CurlyQ, thanks for bringing this up. My father died from complications due to diabetes and I always participate in walk/runathons or fund raising as well. I will continue to spread the word :)

Hi everyone,
Mouthwashes are fine but so many people with diabetes have dry mouth, a result of both the disease process and the various medications. If someone has any trouble with dry mouth they should NOT be using a mouthwash with alcohol - ie. listerine, scope, etc. The alcohol in these only dry the mouth out more which can lead to an increase in cavities because their is a lack of saliva to rinse out the acids from the foods we eat. Therefore, stick with a mouthwash without alcohol or if you absolutely insist on those with alcohol at least water them down quite a bit. Biotene is a great mouthwash for people with dry mouth.

Oh, and FLOSS, FLOSS, FLOSS:)

If you have any more questions, I will be happy to help, Wendy
