Hi again! I just restarted running this January after laying off for at least a year and a half.I am not a fast runner by any strech, but after 8 weeks of interval training on treadmill I was able to complete a 5K in 29 min 20sec, which was 3 minutes less than my previous effort 2 years ago.
So, the answer is Yes! faster (not fast) from intervals and I am sure that if I kept training I could reduce time by at least 2-3 more minutes. It was a fun run so I wasn't all gung-ho but if I had some competitive friends to chase I am sure I would be much faster!;-)
I have found that I can run faster outdoors than on treadmill(??) so now that weather is warm I am going to fun outside!Rather look at trees than treadmill readouts!!
