Head Pain During Workouts?

Greetings Cathletes one and all! :)

I just wanted to know if anyone has experienced this before. I've been trying to do more step routine workouts, but I've noticed that whenever I do anything jumpy (jumping jacks, bunny hops, even shuffling in kickbox videos for too long), my head starts to feel something like pressure-borderline-pain. I also hear a bit of a clicking sound in my ears, like something's loose in there and bouncing around. The clicking has been going on for a few years, I think, and it has never bothered me. Usually the pressure/pain doesn't bother me either, since it used to only happen once in a while. The problem is, now it's happening every time I do something that involves hopping or jumping or something to that effect. It also affects my running (I don't notice the pain while I'm running, but it starts after I slow down and then goes away really quickly).

It's becoming a problem because, if I ignore it and keep working, I get a really nasty headache. I want to participate in the road trip if it comes to Chicago, and I know there will probably be a lot of jumping with all the step work.

I talked to my mother about it (will get medical advice from my father soon) and we have a couple of possible diagnoses.

1) A sinus infection. My sister just got over and illness and my dad has been sneezing a bit. However, this doesn't explain why it's happened on and off for a few months.

2) I have braces. I've had them for almost a year and so I know that sometimes your teeth moving can have an impact on your entire head. This makes sense, but I'm still not sure. And then there's still the clicking in my head, which I'm not sure is normal.

So have any of you experienced this before, or have you known somebody with this problem? If so, what caused it? Is there anything I can do to make it better?

Thanks for reading. I appreciate the effort even if you can't come up with an answer for me. :)

Me too

Hi - I get pressure in my head at the same times - hard core cardio, jumping, etc. In my case, it has to do with blood pressure. I have a minor heart condition, and I know thats my body's way of saying back off a bit. I used to teach floor aerobics, and I ignored the pressure once, passed out, and woke up with all the members of my class around me, looking concerned. Talk about embarassing. So now I pay attention. When it happens now, when I start to feel that pressure, I slow down a bit, take it low impact, and if that doesn't ease it off, I pause the DVD, or the run, or whatever I'm doing, and march in place or jog in place. You have to be careful because you also don't want your heart rate to come down too fast either. After a few minutes, if I feel better (and I usually do) I go back at it. I DEFINITELY recommend you ask a medical Doc about it though - you don't want to take any chances with your health.

Good luck! http://cathe.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

I have a couple clients that have this problem too. Most often the reason is due to dehydration. I have one client in particular that now she can tell if she is working out and hasn't had enough water because she immediately gets a headache and then it subsides when she downs a bottle during her workout. Make sure before, during, and after your workouts you are properly hydrating your body. And if you are very very active you need more than the recommended 8 glasses of water a day. Make sure first thing in the morning when you wake up you down 16oz of water. That way you'll start your day off hydrated and ready for your workout. And for every cup of coffee you drink you need one extra cup of water! Yeah, you'll be peeing up a storm, but at least you won't have to worry about dehydration and your skin will be more hydrated too, making you look fresh and alive:)

If you are properly hydrated I would concur with jnstewart's comment, that it could be a blood pressure issue.

Never had the experience and it sounds like that might send me to a doctor's check-up. But I really just wanted to let you know that I'll let my master already has a Grail.

And, of course, thank you everyone for your suggestions. I will try hydrating myself more (I do have a bit of a problem with that...hormones make you feel bloated all the time, you know?) and I will definitely ask my doctor about it. I've got a check-up coming up, too. Good timing.
