uggghhh. Never thought it would come to this. I HATE HATE HATE HATE cell phones!! The thought of my family being able to reach me at the drop of a hat is simply terrifying!!!!!!!!! However, I need a cell phone I think for work as I am often times "on call".

So...............I need all you Catheite's advice! I would just need a simple plan, very cheap, maybe real limited minutes. I would only use the phone to answer my "on call" calls or to call hubby to see what he needs from the store or something stupid like that. NO CHIT CHAT!!! YUCK. So, how cheap does it get with cell phones? How does this all work? I need one that actually works but don't want to spend too much. HELP!!!

 :D

Ooooh Janice I can't help much at all--- I'm one of the chatters you hate!!

It's terrible, but the only time I have to talk is when I'm driving or at the grocery store!!! 90% of the time it's my parents... does that help??

We have a plan with Verizon Wireless which is highly rated by Consumer Reports. They have several plans available and can fix you up with the one that best suits your needs. I highly recommend that you get one. There are so many advantages to having a cell phone!

I use tracfone. I did not want a monthly payment at all. Cingular has something similar called go-phone. Not sure of their plans though

All 4 family members have tracfone. Buy the 1 year card, then if you need minutes add them. Our 4 phones cost less than the one plan we had from US Cellular.

I have T mobile's pay as you go phone. You pay for the phone and then buy minutes as you need them. No contract. I have 1000 minutes that are good for a year...you can buy in much smaller increments obviously but they are good for shorter amounts of time. Although if you buy another block of minutes before the current one expires, whatever you have left is rolled over so you don't lose them. Very inexpensive way to have a cell phone. I don't use mine much so this is exactly what I was looking for.

I starte with a Verizon phone and paid an outrageous monthly fee, ditched that and now have a Tracphone. I'd never go back to a monthly plan. Love pay as you go!
Just Do It! :)

We wen't for the longest time without a cell phone. DH and I finally got one that we share. It really came in handy when we decided to sell our house. We use Cingular.

Janice, I am right up there with you! DH got me a cell phone for Christmas this year, and to be honest I hate it! When I am gone, that is exactly what I like to be - GONE! I need to escape the harsh reality that is life and that includes the ones that I love the most, sometimes.

We use Verizon, and I have a prepayed play. I don't like it at all. He got me 120 minutes and on my second phone call ever, they informed me that I have six minutes left and I needed to buy new minutes. I don't recommend them.

LOL!!! I was so like you when my DH first gave me a cell phone and now I can't imagine my life without it. I only turn mine on when I'm out and about but the only people that have my # are my DH and my siblings. I mostly use it to make calls.

Our families live out of town and my DH works in another city, so just about every call we make is long distance. My plan gives us unlimited long distance calls every evening after 9PM and all weekend long. It more than makes up for the monthly fee in my case. I've had nothing but excellent service from Verizon--never a dispute of any kind in 5 years.

DH and I often use our phones to connect with each other on weekends when we have errands to run but want to meet up for lunch or dinner. I was also thankful to have it when I had a car accident out in the middle of freaking nowhere--LOL!

Anyway, they do take some getting used to, but I've found that I couldn't get by without it now that I've had it;)

hubby and i have cingular's family plan.... we mostly use it to talk to each other if we need to (free minutes phone to phone) and to call family on weekends (unlimited night and weekend minutes)

hubby uses his a bit more.. gives it out to a few people... i never give my number out....

i ALWAYS have the phone with me when i'm on my bike! can't imagine being out in BFE without it! ACK!

cute work out clothes are good for AT LEAST an additional 10-15 calories burned!

I just switched from Cingular/AT&T to T Mobile. I'd been looking at TMobile for a while b/c they're much cheaper than Cingular/AT&T & Verizon, but I'd heard their coverage was awful.

Turns out my TMobile coverage is much better than what I had w/Cingular, and the plan is about 30% cheaper. I think they're a really good company to go with if you just want the basics, especially b/c they have a variety of reasonably priced plans.

I hate cell phones too, but had to break down and get one when I was having some medical treatments done on one of my dogs.

I got a Tracfone with a 1 year card. I opted for the nicer phone, which was about $60-$70. I think the one year card/subscription was around $120 which breaks down to about $12 per month. Nobody offers a "regular" plan that cheap. It also includes voice mail.

I'm totally happy with it.

Ok, I am a big cheapie (just got an IPOD NANO, lol) so I got a Tracfone. Refurbished Nokia cell with 60 airtime days and 40 minutes for $19.99. I will likely add the year card after 60 days. Can't get much cheaper than that, eh?? Now to tell my family that they ARE NOT GETTING MY CELL PHONE NUMBER lol....

Thank you for the recommendations!!!:D
