HATE - Jan 31

August

Cathlete
Hiya everyone!

You know, I'm starting to wonder if I've simply grown accustomed to the taste of my smoothie and actually it really is vile. Hmm.

Today I had to run another errand, so I used it as my cardio. I sped walked 15 minutes to where I had to go to return something - the person on the receiving end must have thought I was in some major, major hurry because I was huffing and puffing away and wanting to get out the door to keep my heart rate up LOL. Then I sped walked the 15 minutes back and did Gym Style Back, Shoulders and Biceps.

Question : Is it me or can no one else do exercises bent over in a 90 degree angle? My low back just cannot take it. I tried doing 45 degrees, and even practically standing upright. Advice puh-leeeese! I mean, when I'm doing the back exercises I feel it in my arms, except that I feel discomfort (not pain, but like I want to stretch) in my lower back like I can't support my weight bent over like that.

Question 2 : Is it me or does no one else's hip bones grind into your step even though it is padded by a thick towel when doing leg raises for the lower back? I've got my pubic bone off the edge of the step, but what about the hip bones? Advice puh-leeeese!

Dana - All right. I'll make it a point to ask someone in my village what they think about my Nintendo...hobby. But I won't ask Quattro the frog as he seems to have developed a little crush on me, and I wonder if his judgment might be clouded because of it...Well, curried peach chicken sounds a bit better. Curried chicken would sound even better, great even, but then I guess the point in that recipe is the peach...Now, the remote. Are you sure you just didn't want to do your ab workout? Maybe you subconsciously yet conveniently erased the remote control when you thought you wanted to find it. Or do you have a chocolate raisin somewhere under the couch? Could he be the culprit?...Cardio Fusion? It sounds scary. Isn't that the one that some of you guys dread? Why on earth do you like it? Jumping?

Arista - Oh man, I think everyone has the last 5 pound issue! What is it with bodies and holding on to those last 5, anyway?

>I'll blame it on my fiance.

LMAO. I only have a plant, and it doesn't seem feasible that I could blame him.....How funny that Tiger is competing for the role as King. I hope they'll be able to come around and be friendly soon. Is Gandalf liking the new house?...LMAO about the multi-tasking in a smoothie. Yeah, it's great to be able to knock off some veggie points for the day in a smoothie!..I checked out your website. It looks like there's lots of great stuff there! How fun that must be to be involved in that.

Robin - I had been using that Japanese leaf Komatsuna, but then one day I ran out and tried using just plain ol' spinach, and it was just as delish! So now I'm actually putting in one cup of each....I wonder if I've built up a taste-resistance to it and that it's actually really gross.

Jen - Good for you for winning over yourself! It's sooo hard to workout when you'd rather do blobness. Doesn't it feel great when you finish? And now you can reward yourself with a trip to the dentist, yay! LOL...That Kahlua thing really does sound good. Course, Kahlua is good on anything. Like vanilla ice cream...And stop freaking me out with the raisin! LOL.

Okay. I'm going to take a nap :) and then I guess I'll work.

Have a nice day!

OK, so its still January 30th where I am, but I'm procrastinating on doing my homework, so I thought I'd check out the board and I can't help but respond to you August.

First off, DEFINITELY! I can never stay bent over (90, 45, whatever) for as long as Cathe does when we're doing back rows. Those wide-arm rows that hit the rhomboids (sp?) are especially hard to do bent over. I always wimp out for the last couple (at least).

I used to have a really strong lower back and it was no problem, but since I got lazy and stopped working out consistently for a while, I lost that strength. I used to have pretty strong abs, so I think that really helped my lower back stay strong and stable. I also used to do those BORING leg and arm raises for the lower back (while you're lying on your stomach), so that helped too. I would try working your abs more August, along with your lower back (and maybe throw some yoga in there too).

And, yes, the hips always feel like they're digging into the floor or the step. And I've got some padding! I don't know what to do about that. I generally don't do a lot of floor exercises, so it doesn't bother me! }( (I'm so super-lazy!) Plus, I figure if I'm taking the time to exercise, I should be burning some serious calories. Can't do that lying on the floor!

OK, gotta get some work done before I fall asleep. Catch ya'll soon.

Morning!

August - I cannot keep my back flat when doing 1 arm rows (or double arm rows w/dumbells). I can however keep it pretty flat if I'm using a barbell. Wonder why?

On to #2, yep, even though I fold up a big towel it is still a bit uncomfortable doing the leg raise thingys.

Why did I suggest cardio fusion? B/C the premix I did is easy. Intesne but the moves are easy. The step warm-up is fun and then the drills are killer but not complicated.

Arista - were you able to get anything accomplished last night? How are the kitties getting along?

Well I am home again ! Hopefully this is the last day and I can go back to work tomorrow.

Have a great day everyone and I'll BBL.

Mornin All.

Dana, I'm an early-to-bed-dud too. I usually crawl into bed about 8:30 and read for an hour before lights out. I'm home sick today. I probably shouldn't have worked out yesterday. My cough is worse and I'm achy today. LOL about August's warning that there may be a chocolate raisin under your couch. With 2 small boys, I bet there may be something evern scarier under there.

August, try bending your knees a little when you do your back exercises. That may take some of the pressure off your lower back. I always thought I was doing a perfect 90 degree bend when DH walked in one day and let me know I wasn't. And I don't think there is anything you can do to make those lower back leg lift things comfortable.

Michele, I hope you are fully recovered today. Do you remember much of yesterday? Probably not worth remembering, huh?

Jen, good job on making yourself workout. Have a wonderful time at the dentist.

I'm going to see if there is some barley I can cook for breakfast. Later haters.

Hellllooooo!!!

I slept ALL DAY yesterday. I mean ALL DAY.

*GASP* I forgot that I have a hair appt today in like 30 minutes:eek:

I'll BBL:* :* :*

Arista - Thank goodness it's not just me! I thought I must be doing something wrong because I cannot for the life of me stand in that position that long. I would love to have a stronger back. I would love to have a toned back! I can totally grab my back. You're right. I need to do more ab work (I hear you, Deb!). And you know, after reading your post, it suddenly occurred to me that I could easily use my fitness ball instead of my step to do the Superman thingies! Thanks for your suggestions and for making me have the ball realization!

Dana - You, too! Oh, happy! I should try those rows with the barbell and see how it feels different. The dumbbells I use are ones that look like a miniature barbell, so they're rather long and clonk each other as they get closer to the floor. It totally sucks....Oh gosh, now you're tempting me with Cardio Fusion.

Robin - What a bummer to hear that your cold came back. I thought they said that working out helps kill a cold?...Thanks for the advice on the back exercises on bending my knees. I exercise in front of my mirror, and I'm always checking out my form (and ma hot bod! LOL, just kidding). Cathe always mentions keeping the slight arch in your back, but I simply can't in that position, even with my knees bent. Maybe I'm trying to lift too heavy? I'm probably getting a good thigh workout though LOL. Maybe I'll try bending my legs a bit more.

Michele - You're cute. This week you're getting yourself done from top to bottom, I see! I hope you have a nice, relaxing hair appointment!

Okay, I'm going to go wash my face now.

Oh, Jen, I told my dinner companions about your kitty and his reaction to the mirror and we were all awwing and oowing about how much we wanted your kitten. :)

I'm rethinking my rotation for next month.

I want to have two days of only abs and supermen.

I'm thinking I'll mix CTX upper, CTX leaner legs, and CTX all abs plus a bunch of supermen (mixed in with our beloved cardio, of course :) )

Does anyone know which of Cathe's workouts have a good superman section?

I think is am getting the beginnings of morning sickness. I tried a new workout this morning (Fitmama by Lisa Hart) and had to stop early because just wasn't feeling like myself. I came to work and had to eat a bagel because my stomach was a little upset. Still feeling a little weird, but not like I am going to throw up. I have a going away lunch today for a friend but I can't imagine eating anything. And there is a happy hour tonight for her last day at work so I will once again have to turn down alcohol. These are the same friends that noticed me not drinking before so I bet they will now know for sure that I am pregnant when I don't drink again and if I act weird at lunch.

Oh yea, and I liked the new video. I got two new ones in the mail yesterday. Fitmama had salsa dance cardio for 20 min and then yoga inspired toning for 20 min. 6 min labor and delivery prep (core work and kegels) and 6 min stretch. Each section can be done on its own or together. Salsa cardio was a little repetitive, but at this point I don't want to think too hard when I work. Just the right amount of intensity - I felt my heartrate go up but any higher and I would get queasy. The yoga toning section was once again repetitive (doing a sequence like 6 times over and over) but dynamic and sort of fun and interesting. It doesn't really do anything for your upper body and mostly works on your legs and abs. I didn't do the stretch at the end yet as I was starting to feel queasy, so I will do that tonight.

I also got Prenatal Yoga by Shiva Rea and I may try that tonight if I feel up to it. It is just stretching and guided relaxation, not too much toning, so may be great for nighttime.

Hi, Everyone
I think I'm going to read back on some posts because I'm lost in a few things...chocolate raisin? And that recipe for that smoothie - you've got to be kidding? Are you sure that tastes good, August? Is that something you decided would be good together or did you get the recipe somewhere? I've never been a big smoothie fan (don't like malts or shakes)and the fruit and spinach combo is something I never thought would be good together...

Diana - how far along are you? Sounds like this isn't your first one.

Who is in Tokoyo? And the Ninetindo addiction? My DH has a Madden addiction. He's gotten better, but I know if I calculated the hours he spent with his PS2, it would add up to several months. I'm not kidding.

I'm one that has a hard time with the 90 degree angle as well. The lower back just can't take it. I've been working the abs to strenthen them to see if that helps. But I've been prone to back spasms so I have to be careful. I did BM2 today, the Bootcamp premix. I modified it a bit to shake things up. During the weight segments, I lowered the weights and increased the reps. Whenever Cathe did a 2-count, I did a single count. Instead of 15 lbs, I'd maybe do 5 lbs. depending upon the exercise. Boy, did that make a difference! My tri's were on fire!

Jen got me started on the Beachbody Slim Series. It's a lot of high rep/low weight workouts which is good for me. I really need to slim down so I'm going to modify Cathe's workouts to be more like the Slim Series.

This post is getting long but thank you all for welcoming me! BTW, what does ETA stand for?

Terri

Terri - ETA stands for edited to add if you forget to put something in a post and then go back and edit it. Actually this is my first baby and it am only 5 1/2 weeks along, so still very early.

Ooh Diane it sounds like it is just starting for you. LOL I'll be thinking of you. With Gannon, my first trimester all that I could eat was cold cereal, salads and cold sandwiches (I ate a lot of ham and cheese). The smell of just about anything being cooked gagged me. Try to stick w/the exercising if you can. You will feel tired of course but definitely much better if you can get in even 20 minutes of something. You are doing great!!!

Robin - I'm sorry that you are under the weather. Take care of yourself.

August - yes, do get Cardio Fusion. Because if you do end up hating it, you're in Tokoyo and you can't come after me. HA!!!! I can't think of any workout that has a lot of supermans. Do you mean that you are only doing abs 2x a month?

Thanks for the answer and congratulations! Do smells bother you yet? I always got nauseated in the grocery store...the first trimester seems the hardest because of the morning sickness and fatigue. Have you had your first appointment yet? That's so good that your working out; keep that up! I didn't and paid for it by gaining a whopping 50 lbs! YIKES!

Just checking back in quickly to say smells bothered me when I was pregnant. Especially coffee. We bought some expensive coffee for a Christmas gift that year and I had to stash it in the attic. The smell was awful.

Hello again -

Oooh, morning sickness! I don't envy you Diane. Great job getting through that workout though! That is definitely going to put you in a sticky situation with your coworkers, huh? Hang in there. Whatever's meant to be will be. You can only do so much.

Robin, that would be awful if I got sick from smelling coffee! I love my java. You had to put it in the attic? LMAO!

Terri - I'll have to check out the BeachBody slim series because it sounds like we're in the same situation. I have about 20 pounds to lose (to be back at my 21 year old weight - which is the slimmest I've ever been, 130 pounds.) I'm 27 now, so I'm not sure how easy that will be. I come from a short and stocky family (I curse my genetics every morning), so even though I love lifting heavy weight, I might do better lifting lighter with fewer reps. I'm always debating this with myself though. My muscles can only get so big, right? And I want to have rockin biceps, so maybe I should stay heavy? I'll still burn about the same amount of calories no matter if I lift light with lots of reps or heavy with fewer reps. Does anybody have an opinion on this topic? Really, I just want to look like Cathe, and since I come from a German background, I think I've got a shot! :D

August - let me know what you think of Cardio Fusion if you get it... I'd like a second opinion before I commit to buying it.

And to everyone else - please have a fabulous day/night, whatever! It's off to C++ programming hell...

}( I love college. At least my second degree will be worth having.

Well home from the dentist & having my nightly drink while entertaining Sport... Storm is outside & he is SO needy when I get home...did I tell you guys I had to hold him while doing leg lifts Monday night? He wouldn't stop crying!

August- I always have to "re-position" myself when they want you to bent in half doing weights, I have a chipped disc in my low back and it always bothers me.
"But I won't ask Quattro the frog as he seems to have developed a little crush on me, and I wonder if his judgment might be clouded because of it..."
Okay I must have missed something here??? Explain please!!!

And August you must get a kitten, come on... give a homeless kitty at the shelter a home...you know you want to. I am so happy I got a second cat, I've never had more than one pet at a time & was a little worried but it's the best thing I've done!

Arista & August- What exercises are you doing with your pulvic muscles in the step? Aren't you supposed to be using a ball?

Robin- Manage to find any barley? What's for dinner? I am starving... as usual!

Diane- Did the co-workers notice anything or make any comments tonight?

Arista- If you have the tendency to bulk up easily I would say don't lift heavy. I curse my genetics all the time too! I can't do much high step at all & have to watch even regular step b/c my thighs get real muscular very easily. I find light weight/high rep is the best for me & to get my arms in shape, I never lifted more than a 10lb. weight-just lots of reps & kickboxing is great for the arms, slims then down & tones them up. Try it!

Terri & Dana & anyone else I missed-hello, hope you had a great day!

Well off to feed Storm her shrimp & make me something for dinner. Oh yeah, did I tell you guys that Storm is spoiled and instead of cat treats she get 3 shrimp every night, i call it Storm's shrimp cocktail minus the cocktail! I tried to give Sport a cat treat the other day but he wouldn't eat it so I'm not getting him started on shrimp! :)
