has anyone had their ac ducts cleaned?

i have terrible allergies and i was wondering about having this done. is it a huge process? do they have to tear your house up? TIA!

I used to work at a place that had them cleaned all the time. I don't remember how often though, but they did it on the weekends when nobody was there. I don't think they have to tear your house up to do it, but you don't want to be there when they do it especially if you suffer from allergies, sinus problems, or asthma. It wouldn't be hard to find out how much does it cost in your area, if it is a huge process, etc. just do a search over the internet or the yellow pages and start making calls. Meanwhile have you considered buying an air purifier? I own an ionic breeze GP from sharper image and I couldn't live without it.

My neighbor does this as his profession.

He has never had to tear up anyone's house yet. At some place in your house the ducts are accessible (crawl space, cellar or attic). If it's never been done before he cuts an access hole (which he puts a patch on later), blocks the vents and runs a special vacuum cleaner head down the duct. His vacuum cleaner head has a tv camera on it so he can see the duct as he is cleaning it.

I guess if I had questions I'd call your local person. Depending on the age of your house, how often you change your ac filters, it might be a good bet for you.

I had this done about a month ago and no they didnt tear up my house. The guy said it hadnt been cleaned in ions though and it smelled kinda funky around my house fur like 2 days after.
