has anyone continued running while pg?

Hi all!

My husband and I are trying for #3 and I have recently started a running program and am doing about three miles, four to five times a week. If and when I do become pregnant, is it okay to continue with this as long as I'm comfortable doing so?

Thanks!
Michele

From all the research I have done it is okay to do so, but only if you are not overexerting yourself and you are not in pain. Do the talk test. If you can carry on a conversation then you are doing okay. I am continuing my 2 mile runs until I am too uncomfortable to do so. However, my normal 20 minute run is now more like 25 minutes. I still want to get the distance in but it takes a little bit longer now because I tire easier. My pace will probably drastically slow down again once I start showing.

Best of luck trying to conceive!

Hi Michele,

I ran throughout my last pregnancy with no problems. My doctor was fine with it. In the first trimester, I tired easily and had to shorten my runs. As I got further along in the pregnancy, I went from straight running to run/walks so that I wouldn't overexert myself and get breathless. I also made sure that I had water to drink during the run.

My pregnancy was a surprise, and when I conceived I was running about 50 miles a week. My other children were conceived with infertility treatments and I never expected to get pregnant the "normal" way. I didn't know that I was pregnant until I was about 5 1/2 weeks along.

Good luck!

Hi Michele! I'm a fellow mom and 2nd time mom-to-be, certified fitness instructor, personal trainer and HealthyMOMs certified. From a medical perspective (re: your pregnancy and baby), there aren't any real limitations to running during regnancy. From a FITNESS perspective, I wouldn't necessarily recommmend it due to the relaxin in your joints. Running, while seemingly an easy exercise to perform, may result in many "quirks" for the unpregnant runner whose form is not impeccable, has poor quality shoes, etc. Add to that, you now have soft joints (less protection for ligaments, tendons, cartilage, etc.), added weight, change in center of gravity and so on. I am an avid runner as well but I want to run well into my old age so I have forgone running for the second time due to pregnancy because I believe that in the long run (LOL) the 10 months without is worth a lifetime of continued enjoyment for this type of exercise.

All that being said, I can understand the boredom of the limited types of cardiovascular exercise. I continue to do elliptical, stationary cycling and power-walking, all of which require you to maintain form, and keep my eye on my due date. I've also done really well with strength training in a group format for more fun and variety.

Hope this is helpful and not a downer;-) Congratulations on your pregnancy and desire to be a fit-mommy!

Good to see you Jeni and congratulations on your pregnancy.

As for running, I ran during my last pregnancy until I was 31 weeks. I stopped when I started feeling uncomfortable. I had a lot of problems with my joints being too relaxed.

If it feels OK, then it probably is Ok, but Jeni raises some excellent points with the joint instability issues. Incidentally my joints were much better with my first but I didn't run for as long. I think the joint problems can become more pronounced with each pregnancy.

As you are just pregnant, have you considered swimming - great in the heat when you are heavily pregnant and something you can do right up to delivery (like me :) )

Cheers
