I saw a magazine from BEST FRIENDS (animal rescue) at work the other day and there was the sweetest article about dogs rescued from the Vick dog fighting compound that touched my heart. They told of one dog that cowed in the corner when a leash was brought in the room and how they got the poor critter used to the idea of going for walks: They dropped the leash and left it, he sniffed around it, then he dragged the leash around, then played with it... After some days had passed they clipped it onto his collar and took him for a walk. Now he gets all happy whenever he sees it because he knows he's going for a walk. Isn't that sweet? The people taking care of the dogs at the sanctuary spoke a lot about how desperate the dogs are to please everyone and how much tail wagging was going on. The accompanying photos are really lovely. Evidently, Best Friends doesn't believe in euthanization unless an animal is in failing health (bless them) so they've worked hard with each and every VICKtory dog. The article said some will be sent to loving homes but most will live out their days in peace and tranquility at the Best Friends rescue ranch. Finally, those poor critters know love. Aren't you glad?
