The best video ever when dealing with a high needs newborn. It saved my life too. Nobody ever prepared me for a colicky baby. A week after my son was born, my pediatrician recommended it when my husband and I went to him in exasperation about our son's 3-4 hour screaming jags. The 5 s's really do work. My son is mellowing significantly, but when he has a nasty bout, hubby and I need all 5 of the S's together. They do indeed work. I don't know where we'd be without that video. I think it should be included in any childbirth class, since some of us are so naive we think we will be bringing home a peaceful baby.
I agree with the other poster about the swaddling blanket. Most that you buy are too small. We followed Harvey Karp's recommendation for 38 X 38. We went to Walmart and had them cut some stretchy jersey material for $2-3. If you do this, make sure the fabric has a little stretch to it. It helps to get an effective swaddle. The straightjacket method (with arms pinned down along the sides) really does help to calm them. When my son is anxious and screaming, his anxiety is fed by thrashing about.
I would also recommend Sears' book "The Fussy Baby Book." Or there is a section in "The Baby Book" that is very useful for remediating colic.
Fitnurse, are you finding that your baby is colicky too? If so, I'm amazed at the parallels between your experience, mine, and CyclingGirl's (Steph). (overdue, inducing, C-section, etc.) Several childbirth experts have also suggested that colic can be remediated by chiropractic treatements. I haven't gone that route, but I wonder if anyone here has.
