Handweights for Kickbox

Cathlete
Hi Cathe,

A couple of times a week, if I'm feeling strong, I use 2lb. handweights during the arm drill segments of Cardio Kicks and CTX Kickbox (haven't attempted KPC yet!). I do the double time for all the drills except the hook as I don't feel I use good form if I do it double time. I do however, put a lot of emphasis on applying the brakes and can really feel it in my back and shoulders. I know the double time is for endurance so am I still getting a benefit by doing it single time. My heart rate tends to stay up so that's probably a good thing.

Thanks for all your wonderful kickboxing workouts. You are ABsolutely the best - Don't ever stop making them!!!

Hi Jillybean - I posted in the wrong forum. Oh well! Anyway, they are not gloves - they are 2lb hand grips with velcro - Got them at Dick's Sporting Goods. Also Janis Saffell sells something on her webisite that I think are similar. They are used with her Hardcore Kickbox Circuit workout. I bet Kathryn would know exactly what they are. Hope this helps.

Take care

I have a pair of 1# each ironwear gloves (the same manufacturer as the gloves that Janis Saffel sells, but hers are purple and mine are black!~). I bought mine several years ago at Target, but I don't know if they still have them. I don't think I would go above 1# (unless there were an intermediate weight between 1 and 2 pounds) because the speed and power of the punches already puts quite a bit of stress on the elbows and shoulders with 1# (I'd also advise anyone starting out with these to NOT use them for the warm-up or cooldown--in fact, I never use weighted gloves in a warm-up--and to gradually build up to using them for longer periods so that the shoulder and elbows get used to the extra weight).

Thanks AJ for the site link - I think I'll get the gloves and thanks Kathryn for your advice. JB - hope this helps.

Walmart has inexpensive weighted gloves.

I think the brand is Gold's Gym Flex Iron.

I have a pair of 1.5 lb. gloves - $9.97.

They also have 3 lb. gloves, but I don't know the price.
