Hand Pain!

Hi Cathe!!! Lately, since I have been using big dumbbells - 20 and 25 pounders - I have developed a little pain in my hands, around the base of my fingers mainly. It really seems to be aggravated by deadlifts with big weights and chest work. My forearms ache a little sometimes too - sometimes my hands and forearms give out before the muscle I'm trying to work does.Am I doing something wrong? Or should I do more of those forearm exercises like on Triceps and Biceps? Thanks in advance. And I wish you the best for your new baby!!

Hi Ally! This exact thing happened to me when I went into heavier weight with the slow and heavy workout during chest flys. I found that I was so worried about the weight sliding from my grip during the lifting phase that I was clenching my hands too tightly(even with my weight gloves on).

What helped me was initially resting my hands for two weeks with no weight training at all, just cardio. Then doing less concentrated strength training workouts and more total body workouts like MIS at 2 times per week for two weeks. I also found that keeping the slow and heavy workout series to only three weeks at a time really helped (I kept my same weight and was fine with that but if you still feel a funny sensation in your hands then cut back on the amount of weight you are using).

Side note: Pay attention to your grip while doing hi-rep workouts as well. Sometimes having your hands in the same position for so long can bring this same sensation on too. When doing these workouts be sure to take breaks when you feel the tightness in your hands and/or forearms as to not aggrivate the situation. Good Luck!
