hair emergency!!!

I'm usually not one to fuss and fret over my hair (I wash, condition, and let air-dry, spritz with water and rearrange in the a.m. if it needs it, and use some other leave-ins on occasion), but I'm fretting now!

I got a fabulous cut in Paris (from a place I just walked into on a whim), and now I need someone to keep it up.

Before my cut, my Parisian "coiffeuse" discussed options with me, told me that she'd be cutting dry (which, according to her, is what you should do on curly/wavy hair...NOBODY EVER DID BEFORE that I recall!). She also said that the too-square or blocky look I didn't like in the top area (a look she called "tête de champignon" = "mushroom-head"!!) was due to someone cutting round/circular rather than square (almost like a man's cut is what I need). Who knew? Certainly not the previous hair stylist I went to, LOL!

Then, she sat me down, didn't have ME move my head around every-which-way to accomodate her cut, but stood, sat and otherwise moved around me as I kept my head in a natural allignment. She also used some mysterious, special scissors or something on the back.

The result (after close to 1 1/2 hours of cutting, then washing, putting in a plant-based blond rinse that just colored the white hairs, but enlivened my regular hair color, serving me fruit-flavored water, discussing Sarkozy and how the French are sorely disappointed in him) : a cute short cut that needs pretty much no care at all. Even less spritzing-when-it's-not-quite right.

It looks fabu from the back and sides as well. (well, with one exception: I didn't check out the back with a mirror until I got home--just forgot--and she'd left the natural trail of hair on my neck: I shaved it off, and now it's perfect!)

In our consultation, I'd asked her to "take off 10 years," and when she was done, she said "that's 15 years less!"

How can I find someone to do as good of a job? (I'm sure if I go in and ask "can you replicated this?" someone will say 'yes' even if they can't). I've already had to trim the bangs a bit on my own, and need help fast! LOL!

(I joked with my "coiffeuse" that if I were like Oprah Winfrey--I had to explain who that was--I'd take my private jet whenever I needed a cut, and come to Paris. She replied that I could stay where I was, and send the jet to HER, and she would come...with husband and dog in tow!)

Hmmmm. That is a tough one because you are right. You go in and the stylist is going to say that she can do the same. I would maybe get some recommendations from people that have good hair cuts maybe? Maybe see which salons in your area are rated the highest? Hope I helped a little bit? :D

Kathryn:

I AM someone who obsesses over my hair and lately I can't seem to get a good cut since I cut it shorter last year. I keep trying and trying to get it shaped right.... my hairdresser moved to another salon and I'm not willing to travel to the ends of the earth and she wasn't doing a great job at the end either, so I am going to someone else at the salon and she is doing great - I'm just having a hard time styling it at this length ... so I have to stop going back every four weeks to "reshape" it (which ends up witih it shorter) and just let it grow out. A couple of inches will make a huge difference with this style... I DO feel your pain! I agree in asking people whose hair you like and whose hairstyle and type are similar to yours who they see.
