this is gross but i woke up this morning with an exteranl hemmrhoid. i've never had this before. i think it was from working out in my thong underwear which rubbed and shifted irritating the area. i still would like to do cardio today but i'm not sure if that will make it worse. can i still workout?

The first thought which occurred to me was to workout in some loose fitting shorts...no underwear. Get better soon...

Workout without any tight fitting clothes. Working out will not hurt it.

Purchase a pan that is called a sitz bath and soak the bum at least once a day. Use witch hazel to clean the area after every evacuation. Prep-H will help reduce swelling. Avoid straining and eat lots of fiber so you do not push it out any further. Do not wear thongs until it is healed.

If it does not retract after a few months then go see a doc, these have to be surgically removed.

Get better soon !

you have my sympathy!!!
you can actually use a finger to gently push it back....
i refuse to admit how i know about doing this;), but my midwife recommended it.....for a friend of mine, of course!;):p

I share you pain. After the birth of my second child, . . voila external hemmroid. The Dr. said that it was very common. It is from straining during a bowel movement and pushing during child birth. I was in labor for 48 hours. :( Sorry if I added to the grossness. I was told to increase my fiber content so as to not strain. I don't believe thongs cause this. They come from inside the body. As Kate mentioned you can just push it back, and I was told that they can go away but for the most part the only solution is surgery. Alas another body sacrafice for having kids, . . but hey they are sooo worth it.

Ah. It's not gross! LOL I've had those beautiful things since I was pregnant with my FIRST baby over 15 years ago.

Are they irritating? If not, just leave them alone. Otherwise I'd recommend using hydrocortisone 1% OINTMENT,...which is avaible over the counter. You can slather it on up to four times a day.

....another reason NOT to wear thongs. :D

What likely caused it was not the thong, but possibly the strain from your workout. Think heavy lifting, or intense, new core work, etc. DO NOT workout for a few days - straining and increased blood flow will make it worse. Rest.

P.S. I think I'm glad I don't have kids. Do they really stay forever? I would be too embarassed to ever have s*x again.

My sympathies. I have a small external one that pops up/out every once in while. First got it after the birth of my first child. I use over the counter treatments and generally it reduces in a few days. I agree you need to take a stool softener or eat lots of fiber to make sure you are not straining to go to the bathroom.

Best of luck on this; been there.

Hi there-

I got one of these after having my son almost 8 years ago. While mine has never totally gone away, it doesn't "pop out" very often. When I do get a flare up, its usually because I'm not eating enough fiber or drinking enough water, and then go for a really long hard run or do a really high impact workout like an IMAX.

When there is a flare up, they are pretty uncomfortable.. What helps me the most is sitting in a tub of as hot of water as is tolerable. If that's not an option, preparation H will alleviate some of the pain. If that's not an option, grab a hot washcloth and press it against the 'roid.

They are gross, but unfortunately a pretty common malady.. don't feel embarrassed.. there is probably way more people in this world walking around them than you think! :)

Take care, Lynn M.

You don't get hemmorhoids from a thong, BUT thongs definitley inflame them. I got my hems after the birth of my first child and they became chronic. I ended up having to have surgery (the most painful surgery on the planet).
Take care of yourself. Don't work out, especially lift heavy, until it shrinks and you are no longer in pain.
I feel for you:(

ok, first thanks for all the responses. This may be gross too but i told my husband my issue and he wanted to see it so i showed him. We have a very open relationship. He said it looked like a blister. So i have a new theory of thought: normally when i workout, i wear regular underwear or no underwear at all. Well yesterday, i wore my thong underwear and did drill max which has a lot of movement. When i finished the workout and was in the shower, i noticed tenderness in the area but didn't think anything of it. By this morning it was a swollen bump. So mabe the friction of the underwear caused it? If it doesn't go away by the end of this weekend i'm making a doctor appointment next week. It doesn't burn or itch but its uncomfortable. My mom suggested that i put some desitine on it and take some advil to reduce inflammation if it is just irritated. We'll see.

External hemmoroids are actually blood clots that have came to the end of their "journey". I have had these, both external and internal. I have had surgery to remove the external.(twice). My Dr. persribed cream and supositories that have a stronger medicine than Prep.H this stuff works well. Mine acted up about 2x/year and after surgery...AAAHHH:)

I wear and work out in thong underwear all the time and never had a problem! Now I'm going to be paranoid about this happening to me!(if in fact it's an irritation from the underwear and not an actual hemmorhoid)
Thanks alot! :p:D

Seriously though, I'm sure it's uncomfortable. I hope you feel better soon!

underwear friction can't cause a roid! I got mine when I fell offthe frontporch onto my butt! and after having my third child.

It sounds like a blister to me. I got something very much like you described after a course of antibiotics. Lovely. It supremely painful, but it was not a hemorrhoid. What worked for me was keeping the area clean and dry, and applying hydrocortisone ointment 2-3 times per day. Briefly icing the area actually helped, too.
