Great article on veganism

Because what this forum needs is more threads about veganism, right? :p
:D

I like this quote: "We're not telling you what to eat. We're telling you what you're eating."

I don't discuss it much offline actually. I don't mind questions out of curiosity, but I'm not interested in debates. If I ever get sucked into one though, I'll be using the above line.

Thank you for the link. I have been vegetarian for a long time but lately have been moving more toward vegan. I think this article just pushed me over the edge. I have a Q about where to buy vegan shoes and bags. I have been looking for quite a while and really haven't found much. Any suggestions?

Phyllis, I'm SO delighted that you are making the switch. :D:cool::eek::p

Zappos.com has vegan shoes and bags (just type "vegan" into the search option). Mooshoes.com carries vegan shoes, bags, and accessories. Veganessentials.com carries all kinds of vegan goods, including shoes. I'm sure there's lots more of online options for shoes--I just don't buy shoes much. I did just recently buy some J41 vegan shoes, called Madrid. Here's a link if you wanna check them out:

I like that quote as well.

Interesting, isn't it, how non-veg*ns often seem to want to start a debate about veg*ism (often at the table), as if just the very presence of a veg*n makes them feel they need to (sometimes vehemently) defend themselves.

The book "Vegan Freak" talks about being vegan in a non-vegan world and how to deal with those kinds of situations. A good read, IMO (one of those books that I read and thought "EXACTLY!" on almost every page)

Pick up a copy of VegNews magazine or even Vegetarian Times (the latter is easier to find, the former more interesting, IMO) and there will be quite a few ads for online places to buy shoes and bags.

http://www.alternativeoutfitters.com/ is one.

www.veganessentials.com and www.veganstore.com are two that offer many items, including shoes and bags.

Birkenstocks and Earth shoes have specific vegan styles (though it seems to me like the vegan Earth shoes are not as good quality as they used to be. At least the non-sneaker styles. I've tried some lately that I thought were pretty cheap looking, while previous styles I've bought I love!). Many Croc shoes are vegan (though not all).

Payless also has quite a few non-leather shoes and boots (look for "man-made materials" on the label).

Several manufacturers make non-leather sneakers (Reebok and New Balance, for example).

Phyllis, I just checked to see where you live. There are brick-and-mortar vegan stores in New York that specialize in vegan ware. ONe that is primarily shoes (can't think of the name offhand, but a search for "vegan shoes New York" would probably get you the name and addy.

I just ordered this book. :)

Phyllis, any time you need to find a vegan alternative for something, just holler. Someone here will have an answer for you. It seems like every day I learn of a new product, website, or store.

Payless is my favorite for inexpensive shoes.

Thank you for all your suggestions. I do live in Woodstock NY so we have one store in town that carries all sorts of clogs, Birkenstocks, Earth shoes etc and I did get a pair of Keene(?) vegan sneakers there that I love. I will p/u a copy of VegNews probably at my local health food store. Luckily this is Woodstock so you can get all sorts of "alternative" stuff here. I just want to mention that we lived in India for many years and there is an emporium there called Khadi which sells leather products from naturally dead animals. I thought that was interesting!
