Give me a reason

Mariela

Please give me powerful reasons to care about my eating habits. When I was pregnant I used to eat very clean and healthy. When I was breastfeeding, too. I wanted to give the best nutrition to my babies through my bodies and also not become depleted myself. That was a powerful motivation. Now, I see myself young (26) and functioning every day and I think that things like diabetes, etc. will never happen to me. I think there is also in my subconcious something that tells me that caring for myself is selfish, that if it only benefit me (and not others as well) there are not enough reasons to do it. I know I am important, and I love myself, but it comes from a misinterpretation of my religion that my parents somehow taught me.
Please, give me powerful reasons. Say something scary about my health. No Pep talks, though, please :7 .

Mariela,

You need to eat healthy so your children will learn how to eat healthy. Be a good role model for them in that respect. It will make a big impact on their health. How's that? :)

You won't always be 26. The rest should follow from that! }(

Think of it as an investment in your health, which translates into potentially thousands of dollars, and many months of higher quality of life, and of course, you won't look like an Idaho potato when you're my age (47).

I agree fully with Gayle. My son loves fruit and salads now at the age of 4. I give full credit to the fact that I have always tried to eat somewhat healthy around him. Granted he does eat chips every now and then, and loves his corn dogs, but he also loves his turkey sandwiches. So, eat healthy for your kids!

Hi Mariela,

I'll try not to sound "peppy".

If you could eat healthy for your children (while pregnant and while breastfeeding) then you should care enough about yourself to do the same when they are not directly dependent upon your body. You say you know you are important and that you love yourself, but your actions say differently.

You must break free from the notion that caring for yourself is selfish. I understand those thoughts come from your upbringing (my parents believed the same), but they don't have to continue. You have a choice about what you think/believe. Caring for yourself first guarantees that you can care for others too. If you do not take care of yourself, then you will have no way of taking care of anyone else. It also will help in your everyday life. You will be more kind, caring, upbeat, and helpful because your body and mind will be nourished. Everyone benefits from that -- not just you.

In addition, do you want to teach your children the same defeating beliefs that your parents taught you? That is what you are doing. Children learn more from the examples that their parents set than they do from what their parents say. Teach them that it is good to take care of yourself, starting with what you put into your body.

Health problems can happen to everyone, so you are not immune simply because you are young. Now is the time to take steps toward preventing disease.

Also, keep in mind that some people in your life may think you are selfish for taking care of your body by eating healthy and exercising -- but you cannot listen to them. They simply don't understand the benefits. Do what is right for you and your life -- it is the only one you have so you'd better take care of it.

How's that?
Shonie

Great reasons everyone

Its true Mariela

"If you cant take care of yourself first, then how can you be exspected to care for others second?"

I dont think its always "up bringing or religion" that brings the notion that woman taking care of themselves is selfish or vain!, I thinks its just woman in general. Always putting ourselves last on the list of priorities is almost the way we are born, but you can change that!.

Give yourself permission to be No 1. Set yourselfs a small goal for each day, or each week - like "I will take a 20min walk today, or I will eat 2 pieces of fruit today" - and when yourve achieved that, look in the mirror and tell yourself outloud " I ROCK"

You can do it sister

I agree with all the reasons the other members gave you and I have one more. Think of healthy eating as fuel for your body and emotional state. You can't give to others (family, friends) if the well is dry. Eating well, helps keep your moods in check or at least it seems so to me, I have alot more patience with others when I'm eating healthy, I think that it is selfless not selfish to care for your self. Hello,
Try reading the new Perricone book "The Perricone Promise." It certainly does explain in great detail how sugar wreaks havoc inside and out. Producing wrinkles, less collagen production, attaches to all sorts of internal organs & muscles, the list goes on and on. The book really shows the advantages of clean eating not just for your health but for wrinkles, sagging skin, brain functioning etc.. Good luck

SNAP OUT OF IT!!!! Not to be a b*tch, but that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard! "caring for myself is selfish"?!? You can't be serious. You have a child. You HAVE to care for yourself! You need to have the energy to keep up with that little one and you'll be a much better mom if you take care of yourself. I'm 11 years older than you, so I obviously don't naturally have the energy level you do, but I absolutely have to exercise and eat right or I just don't want to do anything with my 4 year old.

Functioning is not good enough. You need to be happy. And happy is not possible without being healthy. "Functioning" is not healthy. Just because you aren't "sick", you aren't as good as you can be.

PLUS - you want to be a good role model for your children. Do you want them with that same attitude that it's selfish to take care of yourself?

I am a strong advocate for keeping yourself as a high priority. In fact - today is my second "mental health" day. Since I have so much paid time off from my job, I'm staying home alone. I have started doing these once a month. My husband is at work, my daughter is at preschool. And I'm home ALL ALONE!!! Not gonna do any housework. Just going to do some KPC, then take a shower and go pick up my copy of Return of the King from Media Play and watch it while I wrap Christmas presents. Do I feel guilty that I could be using this day to spend time with my daughter? NO WAY! I am SO much cheerier at the end of this kind of day and that makes her happy.

One day you're gonna wake up and be Mogambo's age. <SHRIEK> :7

No, seriously, it's not about your age, it's about feeling good and having energy for your life. When you eat right, it's amazing how much better you can feel! And you have more energy for your Cathe workouts. When I was your age I didn't have half the energy I have now. Why wait? Start enjoying life now! :D

My friend had a stroke on her 33rd birthday. She runs, doesn't smoke, is a healthy weight (I envy her figure!), the busy mother of three and eats pretty healthy. They discvoered that she has had a hole in her heart her entire life, and a problem artery. Although she has made a full recovery, she will be on meds the rest of her life. Can you imagine if she had been clogging her arteries and bombarding her heart with horrible food? Bottom line - you never know.

A stroke at 33? Oh wow! That's horrible. Is she OK? Oh yes, full recovery. Thank God.

It's a good point, though, you never know when something will come out of nowhere, so you have to be strong to handle it!

Here's a good reason: Your children need their mom.

Stay healthy. :)

Plus, you need to fuel yourself well if you want to enjoy Cathe's workouts. It's wonderful to workout with good energy, rather than just being able to get through it.

Donna -- U ROCK! I took an "It's all about me, today" mental day yesteray. We moms give, give, and give. We MUST give ourselves days to restock. We all know that the mood of our homes directly reflect the moms' mood -- good or bad. :)

Go rent a copy of "Super Size Me" and see what you think. I heard all about it, but until I watched it, I could not imagine how powerful it was. I will admit it is a bit extreme, but yet there are people who truly eat this badly. It is loaded with factoids and stats and all sorts of information. The most compelling is what happened to this guy in 30 days!! Just 30 days of eating a certain way. He was being told by doctors long before the 30 day mark to stop his experiment because damage was being done at day 12.

Not to mention it took him 14 months to lose the weight he had gained in that one month.

>>We all know that the mood of our homes directly reflect the moms' mood -- good or bad. <<

Marla, that is amazingly so TRUE!!! I ask you permission to use those words as a quote, and I will put it in an index card and put it were I see it, because I deal with bipolar disorder, and I have to watch my mood very closely to avoid getting out of control. Thanks for those words.

Thanks to everyone.

Mariela,

Absolutely! For me personally, I can always feel the endorphin rush after I workout. I feel ready to take on the world. Also, I'm really trying to eat to fuel my workouts so I can have a lot of energy for my workouts with Cathe -- hers require a lot! I have been reading a few books, including: Lean Bodies, Lean Bodies Total Fitness, Your Body's Many Cries for Water, and The Maker's Diet. All have excellent information.

Please come back here often for support. I visit here every day to get inspired and motivated by these tremendous women!

Blessings to you,
Marla

It is funny because I care about other things, like using a good moisturizer with SPF and working out. But when it comes to eating I am getting aware now that I am not educated enough or I hadn't read something that really SCARES me. Someone mentioned a book that talks about wrinkles...I think that will be one good motivator, because yes, I know sugar is bad (refined sugar, I guess), but I don't know exactly what it does and how it does it.

Also, seeing it (getting good nutrition) as a RESPONSIBILITY is going to make me do it. I realized it after reading your posts.

I believe the book that was mentioned is "The Perricone Promise." You can see Nicholas Perricone's entire presentation on PBS -- I just saw it last weekend. It's very, very interesting. Eating healthy is good for your entire body -- including your skin. I believe Dr. Perricone is a dermatologist, but his presentation covers so much more -- insulin, cellular activity, etc. Check the PBS web site and see if he'll be on again soon. If he is, I hope you can watch it. It was really good.:)

Knowledge is power. It's one thing to be told "It's good for you." But when you understand the how and why, it's truly motivating.

Let me know if you can't find the PBS info. and I'll try to get it for you.
