OK.....I cannot for the life of me, figure out how to use my Garmin as a HRM ONLY! I figured out how to turn the GPS function off, but then I get lost. The manual isn't all that helpful either. I thought I had it working the other day, while I was doing Step Blast, but then when I wsa done and reviewed my info, it just told me the time I exercises and my HR avg and max....no calories burned.

Can anybody help this lost soul? PLEASE?

Gayle

Hi Gayle. I have the 305 and you know I never even use the HRM reader. I hate using the chest strap. I usually just use it for time, distance, and calories but if you push the arrow up and down button on the right side I know it changes the screen and there is a screen for HRM and time only. I know what you mean about the manual, I didn't even bother reading it. I'm a push buttons and cross your fingers and hope you don't mess it up, while trying to figure it out on my own type of girl. I like to trail run, and hike so I love using my 305 to calculate distance.

The 305 does not calculate calories from the HR. A sore spot with lots of regular 305 users. With a couple of exceptions (which I'll get to in a minute), the Garmin Fitness line of GPS units (Forerunners and Edges) calculate calories based on speed/distance (from the GPS or the footpod or cadence unit), not HR. So when you are just running the HRM, you won't get calories burned.

The notable exception is the Forerunner 305. These units will calculate based on HR, but ONLY if you have completed a New Leaf Metabolic Assessment. More info on New Leaf here: http://www8.garmin.com/products/trainingcenter/newleaf.jsp

I have a New Leaf profile, so I'm able to use my 305 to calculate calories burned even with the GPS turned off. Figured it was easier than buying another HRM.

WOW! Who knew? lol Thanks, guys, for your responses.

April-I have the Forerunner 305, so it looks like all I have to do is complete the assessment above and off I go. I'll keep you posted.

THANKS AGAIN!

Gayle
