Gaining Weight/Fat despite exercise and diet

Hello All -
I have been gaining weight at a ridiculous rate. I have gained 13 pounds in 2 weeks - NO JOKE. Gained a jean size in 6 months, used to have washboard abs now I have a pooch and I look like I am 2 months pregnant. I have also added lots of cellulite on my thighs of which was never an issue on my quads. I exercise 6 days a week for half an hour, eat whole foods, my meals consist of 300/400 never over 500 calorie meals 3 x's a day plus a small snack in the afternoon to get me from lunch to dinner time. I have tried to cut my calorie intake even more and I pack on more weight. I have had my thyroid tested and all comes out normal. Is it possible that I am not eating enough calories? How does one put on that much weight and cellulite in such a short period of time? Oh yes, I strength train 3 x's a week and do cardio/HIIT 3 x's a week. I cut down my workout times a year ago due to overtraining and just not feeling well. Half an hour works out well for me. I am 36 if that means anything. Thanks for any advice

What kind of calories are you eating? Do you eat a lot of carbs? Are you on any meds? It almost sounds like what I started going through when I hit menopause!

When you say you had your thyroid checked, was it the full panel including free t3 or only the tsh value?

I was in a similar boat. I got alot of useful information from the fat loss articles on a website called Eat To Perform.

I eat coconut flour, zuchinni, lots of romaine lettuce, flaxseed meal, I just recently cut out all wheat again, I was eating up too 2 servings of homemade sourdough (1/4 cup wheat, water and yeast = 110 calories) . calorie intake is never over 1800 calories.

Yes I had the full panel Free T3 and Free T4. My TSH was super low supposedly indicating that I was hyper but the free t3 and t4 were not even in normal range. Was having night sweats and heart palpations. Have been on thyroid meds for 2 years now and still pounding on the weight.

I suggest checking with your physician. If he or she tells you that nothing is "out of order," make an appt. with an endocrinologist.

At one point during menopause, I gained twenty pounds in two months. Totally freaked me out. I had worked out most of my life, and had always been very lean. So I know exactly what you are talking about.

I actually went to see an Endo last month and I was told that I was very Hyper according to my test results. She never even looked at the weight gain that I had experienced in just 10 days - from 137 to 149 pounds - thats HUGE. I am so frustrated at this point. I guess next stop is check my hormones again and possible Hashimotos test?

Such a rapid weight gain is also concerning for a cardiac condition if this has not been ruled out already by your GP. When the heart cannot pump properly there is backflow of blood and if severe enough it results in generalized fluid retention that will be reflected on the scale. I have patients who will lose > 10lbs in a week once diuretics are started. I'm not trying to worry you, it's just another potential cause for rapid weight gain. In most cases you would have some kind of symptoms though like shortness of breath but I'd certainly go back to your doctor.
