I just read in Runner's World (Oct. 01) that they have come up with a more accurate way to figure your MHR (maximum heart rate) and I wanted to pass it on to any other "superwomen" who do everything and keep track of this sort of thing. There are 2 new formulas: the first is good for people under the age of 40, the second is for over the age of 40.
1. MHR = 208 - (.7 x your age)
2. MHR = 205 - (.5 x your age)
Also, to figure the exact MHR for your body you can take the following test:
1. Be sure you are well rested, well hydrated and well warmed
up.
2. Run hard and fast for 2 - 3 minutes. Jog back to your
starting point.
3. Repeat two more times, running a little harder and faster
each time. On the third and last repeat, pretend you are
running an Olympic race.
4. Check your heart rate during and immediately after the last
repeat. The highest number you see is your maximum heart
rate (MHR).
- Runner's World
I always thought you only needed to know this info when you were running, etc., but since buying a heart rate monitor, I find myself wanting to know what my heart rate is for everything (aerobics, weight lifting, cutting the grass, etc.). Keeping track is the only efficient way to make sure you are burning those fat cells and calories!! Just thought you'd like to know!! : )
