free foods?

When dieting to lose weight, are there any free foods? That is, are there any foods you can eat in virtually unlimited amounts?

It has been a looong time since I have put myself on a predetermined calorie restricted diet and measured out food. But I would like to lose as much weight as I can in the next 5 weeks.

Any advise is welcome. Thank you!

I think lettuce is about it. Most vegetables can be eaten in massive amounts but I think that's about it. Kind of sucks, huh?

I would have to agree that veggies are most likely the only thing that is low enough in calories to "allow" it to be considered FREE.

But it doesn't have to be boring! I've got TONS of yummy recipes that are chock-full of veggies...mostly soups, stews, chilis, stir fries, etc.

Veggies are so yummy prepared so many different ways.

Last night, my friend and I grilled with our families. IN a large Reynolds foil Hot Bag, I tossed 3 large Vidalia onions, a green papper, and 8 carrots. I added NOTHING at all and we put it on the grill with the meat and it cooked those veggies and all the flavors came together so nicely. The amount of liquid in the bag when we opened it was heaven to THIS veggie-lover. No added calories or anything...just fresh veggies and heat.

OK.....sorry to ramble. I LOVE TO COOK and experiment with food!

p.s. if you'd like some recipes, feel free to PM me with your email address and I'd be glad to share.

You forgot exciting things like sugar free jello which has no calories I think, diet soda and mustard. Oh and hot sauce. Oh boy, I would stick with the veggies personally.:p

Gayle, I agree, roasting veggies adds a whole other dimension to their flavor. So yummy! In fact, I think I might roast up some tonight!

I agree veggies are a sure thing. I think instead of trying to eat a certain food in unlimited quantity, it might be easier to try to bulk up the foods you already eat by trying to double or triple the volume with vegetables.

I consider fiber one a free food. Supposedly 1 g fiber requires 7-9 calories to digest, and one serving has 60 calories and 14 g fiber.

Just a thought- I recently made the switch to eating clean, and I just feel like I'm constantly stuffing myself, even though I actually have to put effort into making sure I get *enough* calories every day. I started having Bob's Red Mill High Fiber Hot Cereal with a scoop of whey protein powder (quite tasty) for breakfast and it's about 270 cal total with 28 g protein and 10 g fiber. Just try to be hungry two hours after eating that.

There is no room in my mind (or my stomach) for the sense of deprivation anymore. I'm constantly force-feeding myself, but getting less calories and more nutrients in the process.

I should've listened to all you clean eaters a long time ago! :D

There are some veggies (high-water-content ones) that supposedly use up more calories during digestion than they contain. Celery is one. Pickles are another (and, I assume, cucumbers as well).

Leafy green veggies would be another food that one can consume in as large a quantity as one desires (they are also the most nutrient-dense veggies).

Here are a few links that list the "negative calorie" foods Kathryn mentioned:

Thanks everyone. This negative calorie food list is precisely what I was trying to ask.

I wish I loved to cook. I actually rather despise it. (Too bad since I have children to feed and am conscientious of their eating correctly.)

I don't think I could ever eat clean all the time. Partly because I don't like to cook. And I just like my processed food.

Thanks again!

Zora-WOW! I just checked out those 2 websites and it's awesome! I've bookmarked it! THANKS for posting them!
