Fractured Toe

So, I dropped a kettlebell on my foot about 2.5 weeks ago. My fourth toe was fractured and minimally displaced. I was told not to run or jump for 4-6 weeks. I am really getting impatient and can't wait to do step or run. Has anyone ever fracture their toe? And if so, do you recall the recovery time?

TIA

Jenn

Hi Jenn,

Yup! I dropped a dumbell on my big toe last winter. OUCH! I started biking after about a week and a half, but I couldn't run or jump or do anything high impact for about 3/4 weeks so I totally understand your impatience. You're toe will probably start screaming if you try it too soon anyway. Just keep thinking about how awsome that first step routine will feel after you're all healed up!!

Thanks for the reply. That makes me feel better. I have been riding the recumbent bike, and still lifting weights. I have been trying to do some kickboxing workouts, but keeping them low impact. It's been OK...guess I am too anxious to start up again. I hope I can run in another 2 weeks. It is my 4th toe, so I would think that it shouldn't take so long.

Jenn, I had the equivalent of an ingrown toe nail procedure (for keratinized tissue) on my pinky toe. Not the same as a fractured toe obviously, but still a toe issue that affects workouts. I had lots of bleeding and bandages initially, so no workouts for me during the first 3 days. Any pressure was incredibly painful, so I did only weight work for the first 2 weeks (PUB--over and over again!--and floor work premixes). Weeks 2-4, I did elliptical and more weight work (with standing leg work added in). Weeks 4-6 I did the GS series plus VERY limited, low impact step (like LM w/o the intervals) and low impact kickboxing (MMAs minus the blasts, KM low impact premix). The good news is that during Week 6 I participated in Cathe's Houston RT with no pain whatsoever!

So the 6 week estimate you were given rang true with my situation. I thought I would go crazy without my usual cardio fix but I didn't. I even made strength gains b/c I was able to really focus on my weight training and give it every last bit of energy I had (knowing I didn't need to "save" any for cardio).

I wish you a speedy recovery.

lisa_la_machina, thanks for response. I know there is an end to the pain at some point, I suppose 6 weeks isn't too bad. I like how you gradually added cardio to your routine too, seems that may be how I do it as well. I have to look at the positive in all of this. You are right about the strength gains, maybe I'll see some nice results with that. I have been really focusing on diet these past couples of days because of the lack of cardio, and bumping up the protein. I would actually love to put on a bit of muscle mass, so maybe this could force me to get there. I am unfortunately, a cardio freak, and always have a hard time cutting any of that out of my routine....EVER. I just love the feeling of a great cardio workout and all of the sweat pouring off of me.
